United, Honeywell to Invest in SAF Startup (Ind. Report)

United Airlines Holdings Inc. and Honeywell International Inc. are reporting a multi-million dollar investment in Alder Energy LLC, a clean-technology company to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at scale.

Alder's technology converts woody biomass, forest and agricultural waste to produce SAF while using the same refineries, pipelines and engines as traditional fuel. United, which began using biofuels in 2009, has also pledged to buy 1.5 billion gallons of SAF over the next 20 years.

The company in 2015 made a similar commitment with alternative fuels developer Fulcrum BioEnergy Inc., agreeing to buy up to 900 million gallons of low-cost sustainable biofuels from waste, particularly woody biomass from the paper and pulp industry, the food industry and others.

The companies hope to commercialize the technology by 2025. Fulcrum Completes Nevada Biofuel Plant Construction (Ind. Report)

Pleasanton, California-based low-carbon transportation fuels from municipal solid waste-to-fuel specialist Fulcrum BioEnergy reports construction of the world's first commercial-scale facility that will convert household waste into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), renewable diesel (RD) and renewable gasoline in Reno, Nevada, has been completed.

The plant will convert 175,000 tpy of municipal solid waste into nearly 11 million gpy of syncrude, which would then be upgraded to transportation fuels with the brand Fulcrum Fuel.

Start-up and commissioning of the facility and fuel production is slated for Q4 this year. The company is eyeing eight more locations in the US, which will produce over 400 million gpy of transportation fuel. Fulcrum Bioenergy Selects First UK SAF Plant Site (Ind. Report)

As previously reported, Plesonton, California-based low-carbon transportation fuels-from-municipal solid waste specialist Fulcrum BioEnergy has announced the site selection and launch of development activities on its first United Kingdom residual waste to low-carbon, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) plant.

The 30-million gpy "Fulcrum NorthPoint" biorefinery will be located at the Essar Oil (UK) Limited refinery at Stanlow, Ellesmere Port, in the North West of England. Fulcrum Bioenergy Selects UK SAF Fuel Plant Site (Ind. Report)

As previously reported, Pleasanton, California-based Fulcrum BioEnergy, a producer of low-carbon transportation fuels from municipal solid waste, has announced the site selection and launch of development activities on its first United Kingdom residual waste to low-carbon, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) plant.

The Fulcrum NorthPoint biorefinery will be located at the Essar Oil (UK) Ltd refinery at Stanlow, Ellesmere Port ,in the North West of England.

Subject to planning permission and financing, construction is expected to get underway in late 2023 for completion within 18-24 months. When fully operational, the plant will convert several hundred thousand tons of pre-processed waste into approximately 30 million gpy of low-carbon Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Clean Fuel Standard Act Passes in New Mexico Senate (Reg. & Leg.)

In Santa Fe, the New Mexico State Senate has approved the state's Clean Fuel Standard Act (CFS) requiring a minimum 10 pct decrease in the carbon intensity of transportation fuels below 2018 levels rising to a 28 pct by 2040. The act was originally tabled on 19 Jan, 2021.

Fuel producers and importers could meet the CFS by producing sufficiently low-carbon fuels or by purchasing credits generated from any business in any sector of the state's economy, including the agriculture, chemical, dairy, energy, forestry, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, waste management and wastewater treatment industries.

Also this month, the New Mexico Clean Fuel Coalition was formed in conjunction with the CFS. Coalition members include: Advanced Biofuels Community Fuels, BIO, the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas, Darling Ingredients, EcoEngineers, Fulcrum Bioenergy, Gevo, Iogen Corp., LanzaTech, Novozymes, Neste, Oberon Fuels, Poet, Renewable Energy Group, and Velocys. Fulcrum NorthPoint SAF Plant Announced (Int'l. Report)

In the UK, Essar Oil reports its bulk liquid storage subsidiary Stanlow Terminals Limited is joining forces with Fulcrum BioEnergy to construct a 100 million LPY sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility to be known as Fulcrum NorthPoint within Essar's Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in the north-west of England.

The £600 million facility will use Fulcrum's waste-to-fuel process and Essar will assist with the blending and supply of the new SAF to airlines, with Stanlow Terminals providing product storage and logistics under a long-term agreement.

Subject to planning consent, the facility is expected to be operational in late 2025. JAL to Use Fulcrun BioEnergy Aviation Biofuels (Int'l. Report)

In Tokyo, Japan Airlines (JAL) reports it plans to regularly refuel aircraft connecting San Francisco and Japan with recycled aviation fuel made from household garbage produced by Fulcrum BioEnergy, starting as early as fiscal 2022.

The airline is aiming to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 by introducing advanced jets and fuels and purchasing emission credits from other airlines.

United Airlines Invests $40Mn in SAF, Decarbonisation (Ind. Report)

Following up on our Sept. 19th coverage, US air carrier United Airlines is reporting a $40 million commitment to accelerate the development of sustainable aviation biofuels and other technologies to decarbonize the aviation industry.

As previously reported , United agreed to purchase up to 10 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over the next two years. United also invested over $30 million in Fulcrum Bioenergy, a producer of SAF. The airline's option to purchase almost one billion gallons of sustainable fuel from Fulcrum represents the largest offtake agreement for SAF in the airline industry. Under a TRI, NER is prepared to provide various insurance solutions to biorefinery owners and projects which utilize TRI's equipment and technology.

TRI is a leading provider of steam reforming gasification systems suitable for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), woody biomass, agricultural residues and other waste feedstocks. Its systems have been selected for and deployed on various commercial North American projects including the Fulcrum Bioenergy Project Sierra Biorefinery in Nevada and Norampac black liquor gasification, a division of Cascades Paper. Fulcrum Commits to $600Mn Centerpoint Biofuels Plant (Ind. Report)

California-based waste-to-fuels specialist Fulcrum BioEnergy, Inc. reports it will invest an estimated $600 million in a 50-acre trash-to-biofuels plant in northwest Indiana. The 50-acre Centerpoint Biofuels facility will process 700,000 tpy of garbage into approximately 33 million gpy of transportation fuel.

The project will receive $2.1 million support from the state' Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) conditional tax credits as well as local incentives. Construction is expected to break ground in 2020. Fulcrum Sierra Biofuels to Employ Praxair HOB Tech. (Ind. Report)

Linde plc wholly owned subsidiary Praxair, Inc.reports it has inked a long-term agreement to supply oxygen (O2) to Fulcrum BioEnergy's Sierra BioFuels plant which is presently under construction in Storey County, Nevada. Under the terms of the agreement, Praxair will also construct two vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) plants at the facility, which is expected to commence operations in early 2020.

The Sierra BioFuels Plant will employ Praxair's proprietary HOB technology for increasing syngas yield from the gasification process. HOB technology enables rapid partial oxidation of remaining hydrocarbons and tars in the produced syngas without the need for a catalyst or steam injection. The HOB technology, coupled with gasification in Fulcrum's process, will help transform municipal solid waste (MSW) into renewable crude, jet fuel, and other low-carbon transportation fuels. Fulcrum Sierra BioFuels Dropping NV Energy (Ind. Report)

In the Silver State, the Nevada Public Utilities Commission (PUC) reports it has approved California-based Fulcrum Sierra BioFuels' request to drop NV Energy utility as its energy services provider. To complete its exit, Fulcrum must now file with the state Attorney General's Bureau of Consumer Protection and the Nevada Power Company within 120 days.

Fulcrum plans to use an alternative, independent energy provider for a biorefinery currently under construction in Storey County, Nevada, according to documents submitted to the PUC.

Six major corporate customers have have opted for substantial "but-outs" to exit NV Energy, including: Barrick Gold, MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment Corp, Peppermill Resorts and Wynn Resorts Ltd. Fulcrum Tech, Licenses Fischer Tropsch Technology (Ind. Report)

Oil giant BP and chemicals firm Johnson Matthey (JM) report they have inked an agreement with California based Fulcrum BioEnergy to license their Fischer Tropsch (FT) technology to support Fulcrum's drive to convert municipal solid waste into biobased jet fuel at their new Sierra BioFuels Plant near Reno, Nevada.

When fully operational early in 2020, the Sierra plant is expected to convert approximately 175,000 tpy of household garbage into roughly 11 million gpy of jet fuel.

FT technology can operate at large and small scale to economically convert synthesis gas generated from municipal solid waste and other renewable biomass into long-chain hydrocarbons suitable for the production of diesel and jet fuels. United Looks to Biofuels for Emissions Reductions (Ind. Report)

US air carrier United Airlines reports it plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 pct by 2050 and to that end will continue investing in newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft, implement operational changes to conserve fuel, and expand its use of aviation biofuels.

The airline also noted a recent Boeing 787 flight from San Francisco to Zurich using a 30/70 blend of biofuel and conventional jet fuel. The biofuel was produced from Carinata seeds by Quebec-based Agrisoma Biosciences Inc and supplied by AltAir Fuels.

According to United, the airline has sourced more than 2 million gallons of sustainable aviation biofuel since 2016 and is responsible for more than 50 pct of the airline industry's commitments to biofuel. Additionally, United was the first airline to regularly use sustainable aviation biofuel and has invested over $30 million in sustainable aviation fuels producer Fulcrum BioEnergy.
