Indian Energy Wins Energy Storage Integration Funding (Funding)

In San Diego, Indian Energy LLC, a 100 pct Native American-owned utility-scale and microgrid development and systems integration firm, reports receipt of $1.2 million from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to demonstrate a non-lithium-ion, long-duration energy storage solution.

Utilizing the grant funds, Indian Energy, along with strategic partners Webcor and KE Storage Corporation (KESC), will develop an energy storage Integration and Certification Unit (VICU) to demonstrate the long duration energy storage capabilities of (KESC) NextGen™ flywheel technology. The project will also incorporate 150kW of Solar PV.

CEC Offers $11Mn in Energy Storage Solicitation (Funding)

In Sacramento, the California Energy Commission (CEC) has released a solicitation to fund innovative, non-Li-ion energy storage research projects, including green electrolytic hydrogen systems. This solicitation aims to fund the development and field testing of emerging energy storage technologies for the purpose of raising the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and accelerating market penetration.

  • Group 1 -- $9 million available to develop and validate new and emerging non-Lithium ion energy storage technologies that focus on customer side of the meter applications. This group will focus on supporting energy storage technologies that are in the early stages of development. Group 1 will support the development and field testing of emerging and prototype energy storage systems.

  • Group 2 -- $2 million available to develop and validate green electrolytic hydrogen storage systems in customer side of the meter applications with an electricity-in and electricity-out capability. This group will focus specifically on green electrolytic hydrogen systems.

    Group 2 will be open to Applied Research applications of green electrolytic hydrogen as a stationary energy storage system that is comparable in performance to other stationary energy storage systems (such as advanced batteries, flywheels, thermal storage, and compressed air systems). The hydrogen systems must demonstrate an electricity-in and electricity-out solution in customer side of the meter applications (not just generate electrolytic hydrogen). Additional services (such as heat, oxygen, compressed air or other non-electricity products) can be proposed as long as they have value to the customer and the primary input and output is electricity and the overall system is projected to be cost effective when it reaches the scale necessary for future commercialization.

  • MP Power Seeks Indian Grid-Scale Energy Storage Bids (Int'l Report)

    Reporting from Mumbai, MP Power Management Company, the Madhya Pradesh state government's holding firm for three power distribution companies , is calling for expressions of interest from domestic and global players for the establishment of 500 MW with 8 hours of continuous discharge of grid-scale energy storage service, microgrid and a storage manufacturing facility in the state. The tender call notes the energy storage options could be in the form of chemical batteries (lithium ion, advanced lead acid, sodium sulphur, flow batteries), pumped storage hydro, compressed air energy storage, flywheels or other forms of storage.

    NRStor Acquires Ontario Energy Storage Facility (M&A, Ind. Report)

    Toronto-based energy storage specialist NRStor Inc. is reporting its acquisition of a 5MW connected energy storage facility, located in Clear Creek, Ontario. The Clear Creek facility was originally built by Mississauga-based Temporal Power to showcase its industry-leading flywheel energy storage technology. With this acquisition, NRStor expands its flywheel energy storage portfolio, which already includes Canada's first grid-scale flywheel energy storage facility in Minto, Ontario. NRStor expects to have the full hybrid battery and flywheel system operational in 2020.

    The facility is optimally located adjacent to a 20 megawatt (MW) wind farm and existing Hydro One electrical infrastructure. With support from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) and Hydro One, the facility originally demonstrated the effectiveness of distributed energy resources (DERs) and successfully completed reactive power validation and power quality testing. Ten 500 kilowatt (kW) flywheels were deployed in a modular arrangement to deliver 10 MW of flexible range (+/-5 MW) to the Ontario grid.     Alameda Utility Testing Flywheel Energy Storage (Ind. Report)

    In the Golden State, the city of Alameda's Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) reports it is partnering with flywheel energy storage specialist Amber Kinetics to test the benefits of renewable energy storage.

    Amber Kinetics' technology extends the duration and the efficiency of flywheel systems from minutes to four hours without degradation or wear and tear over time unlike lithium ion energy storage systems. The technology can also be recycled after its 30-year life. As a result, the Kinetic Energy Storage System (KESS) can be used for a variety of utility-scale applications.     Rockland Sells Flywheel Energy Storage Projects (Ind. Report, M&A)

    In Houston, Bracewell LLP is reporting the sale of Rockland Power Partners LP's Flywheel Energy Storage Business to Convergent Spindle and RGA

    In the first transaction, Rockland Power Partners sold two 20 MW flywheel energy storage projects -- the Stephentown project located in Stephentown, New York and the Hazle project located in Hazle Township, Pennsylvania, to affiliates of Convergent Energy and Power, LP. The fully operating projects serve the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) and PJM Interconnection grids.

    In the second transaction, Rockland Power Partners sold all of the equity interests in Beacon Power, LLC, which operates a flywheel energy storage business and owns certain technology, intellectual property, patents and manufacturing equipment related thereto, to RGA Investments, LLC. Both transactions closed on April 27, 2018.     Convergent Acquires Flywheel Energy Storage Projects (M&A)

    New York-headquartered energy storage specialist Convergent Energy + Power is reporting the acquisition of 40 MW of flywheel projects in Stephentown, NY and Hazle Township, PA. from Rockland Capital. Convergent will continue to operate the flywheels to meet evolving energy needs for PJM Interconnection and NYISO grid operators.

    Massachusetts Awards $20Mn to Energy Storage Projects (Funding)

    In the Bay State, grants totaling $20 million were recently awarded to 26 matching funds energy storage and efficiency projects as part of the Massachusetts Energy Storage Initiative (ESI) Advancing Commonwealth Energy Storage (ACES) program. The program is funded by the Mass. Department of Energy Resources (DOER) through Alternative Compliance Payments and administered by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC).

    Among the grant recipients, West Boylston Municipal Light (WBMLP) Plant will receive 50 pct of a proposed $486,000 Amber Kinetics flywheel energy storage system interconnected with WBMLP's 370-kilowatt solar project.
