ENGIE Storage reports it will supply and operate a "turnkey" 19 MW/38 MWh portfolio of six energy storage sites that will contribute to the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target Program and participate in ISO-New England wholesale markets.

The combined solar and storage portfolio, developed and operated by NYC-based private equity firm Syncarpha Capital, LLC, is the first utility-scale solar plus storage offering to benefit from ENGIE's new integrated development, supply and services offering for wholesale market participation.

ENGIE Storage will provide a turn-key GridSynergy® hardware and software solution and operate the storage system for 20 years and will pay fees in exchange for the rights to operate the solar and energy storage system in the ISO-NE wholesale capacity, reserves, and frequency regulation markets.

ENGIE Storage's GridSynergy software platform will seamlessly ensure Investment Tax Credit and SMART program compliance while bidding and operating the energy storage systems in ISO-NE wholesale markets. Under its long-term service and operation contracts for the sites, ENGIE Storage is, in essence, guaranteeing SMART program revenues. The arrangement virtually eliminates storage project operational risk at the six battery storage sites.

Syncarpha designs and builds on-site solar systems for municipalities, utilities, and businesses -- as well as developing community shared solar solutions for consumers and commercial customers. The company currently owns and/or operates solar assets in nine different states. Flanders Commits €400Mn to CCS, CCU Initiative (Int'l Report)
Arcelor Mittal
Date: 2019-03-25
Reporting from Antwerp, the Flemish government reports the approval of a plan to spend €400 million over the next 20 years in an effort to manage carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and to become climate neutral by 2050. The plan calls for a reduction in fossil fuels consumption while implementing carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture and utilization (CCU) of CO2 that is still being produced. Although CCS and CCU technology is not new it is expensive, and there is no related income from CCS for climate protection.

The Flemish government is interested in CCU, an example of which is a pilot project launched in Ghent last week between steel producer Arcelor Mittal and chemicals manufacturer Dow, to split the carbon monoxide and CO₂ from steel production and use the CO₂ to produce bio-ethanol, a renewable energy source.

In another example, energy provider Engie has joined with waste incinerator Indeval to use CO2 capture to produce ethanol in Antwerp. (Source: Various Media, Brussels Times, Apr, 2019)

Netherlands Killing Coal by 2030 (Int'l Report)
Netherlands, Coal
Date: 2017-10-16
The new four-party coalition government of the Netherlands reports it plans to introduce a binding target to lower CO2 emissions by 2030 in order to put a floor beneath carbon prices. Meanwhile, coal-fired power plant will have to comply with recently revised pollution standards that will be implemented after 2021 and will include tougher limits for emissions of mercury, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide.

According to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), the proposed legislation is expected to be a blow for utilities Engie , RWE AG and Uniper SE (FRA:UN01), which brought 3 new coal-fired power plants on line in 2015. The Netherlands aims to source 14 pct of its energy mix from renewables by 2020 and reduce to 16 pct the share of emissions in non-Emissions Trading System (ETS) sectors from 2005 levels. UK Offshore Wind Farm Costs Plunging Sharply (Int'l. Report)
Offshore Wind
Date: 2017-09-20
According to the Financial Review (Iran) the cost of generating electricity from offshore wind farms fell sharply in the UK to the point where it one of the cheapest ways to supply the grid. Wholesale power prices in the UK have averaged about $62 per MWh over the past year.

In a recent UK government auction that handed out power-purchase contracts worth $232 million a year, all of the bids to build offshore wind farms and other renewable technologies were below the $122 per MWh. Auction winners included DONG Energy A/S, with an offer of $76 per MWh for power from its Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm, followed by EDP Renovaveis SA and Engie SA.

The contracts-for-difference auction was for "less-established technologies" such as offshore wind, tidal and anaerobic digestion. The power-purchase agreements are fixed for 15 years.

The offshore wind industry has seen its costs plunge as the capacity of its turbines doubled since 2007. It’s set to double again by 2020, driving down costs further, according to Greenpeace. (Source: Financial Review (Iran), 12 Sept., 2017)

Ohio State Energy Efficiency Projects Set to Begin (Ind. Report)

Date: 2017-08-30
In Columbus, Ohio State Energy Partners (OSEP) reports it has received the Ohio State University Board of Trustee approval to begin updating the campus's energy infrastructure under the terms of a 50-year deal to manage the university's energy assets. Ohio State Energy Partners is comprised of Engie and Axium, an investment firm.

OSEP will begin replacing inefficient "near retirement" age equipment on campus with more efficient new-age technology. Some parts of the plan will happen more quickly, like replacing streetlights, but the most important way for the Energy Partners to exceed its efficiency goals is through building audits to identify specific inefficient aspects where each building could improve. Fixes could include "behavioral economics", new insulation, analyzing building usage, lighting and temperature controls. Engie SA, Uniper SE Abandon Rotterdam CCS Project (Int'l)
Engie SA , Uniper SE
Date: 2017-06-30
In Amsterdam, Engie SA and Uniper SE reportedly no longer intend to participate in a test project to capture and store carbon dioxide generated by one of several major new coal plants in the Port of Rotterdam. Accordingly, the Dutch Economic Affairs Minister Henk Kamp said in a statement he would "examine whether legal steps can be taken to recoup" unspecified subsidies paid to the companies if they do not change their minds and return to the project by Sept. 15.

The plants, which were commissioned in 2014 and 2016, have become a point of contention between environmentalists who want all coal plants in the country to be shutdown and the companies, who say they will demand compensation if they are. The plants and the companies were originally granted construction licenses and other considerations on the proviso that they would participate in the carbon storage project.
