15MWh UK Liquid Air Energy Storage Plant Opens (Int'l Report)
Highview Power
Date: 2018-06-06
In the UK, London-headquartered Highview Power reports the startup of its liquid air energy storage (LAES) plant in Bury, greater Manchester. The development, in partnership with energy from waste firm Viridor, is capable of delivering 15MWh of power.

Hihview's technology stores air as a liquid then converts it back to gas. The expansion process releases stored energy, which is used to drive a turbine to generate electricity. The LAES plant at Bury also converts waste heat to power using heat from the on-site landfill gas engines.

According to Highview, LAES could ultimately scale to hundreds of megawatts, potentially storing enough energy to power entire towns. The company is in discussions with several utility firms to build 150MWh units. The Bury development was partially tax-payer funded with an £8 million government grant. Now Highview plans to export the technology, it said. (Source: Highview Power, energyst., Others, 5 June, 2018) Contact: Highview Power CEO Gareth Brett, +44 (0) 207 484 5600 www.highviewpower.com
