Energy Efficiency Services India Project Wins I4F Funding (Int'l)

The Israel-India Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund (I4F) is reporting grant funding to Energy Efficiency Services Limited (India), an energy service company of the Indian government.

Under the grant, the company will work on increasing the water and energy efficiency in villages in India through the creation and application of water and electricity management systems and IoT monitoring devices. World Bank Supporting Indian Energy Efficiency (Int'l)

The World Bank reports it has approved $300 million of funding to help scale up India's national energy efficiency programme. The Energy Efficiency Services India (EESI) organization will use the money to drive the deployment of energy saving measures in both the residential and public sectors and enhance access to commercial financing.

EESI aims to improve energy efficiency, cut energy consumption and help the country hit its goal of reducing carbon intensity by up to 35 pct by 2030 from 2005 levels The money will be used to create sustainable markets for LED lights and energy efficient ceiling fans, facilitate investments in public street lighting and develop sustainable business models for emerging markets such as efficient air conditioning and agricultural water pumping units. LED Street lighting Mandated in India (Int'l Report)

In Mumbai, the Indian state of Maharashtra Urban Development Department (UDD) reports it has ordered the state's 28,691 civic bodies -- 27 municipal corporations and 235 municipal councils -- to switch to and use only energy efficient LED bulbs for street lighting. The order also calls for all LED street light purchases and installation to be completed through the Central Government owned subsidiary Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL's) Escrow account.

The order is in keeping with the UDD's Energy Conservation Policy of June 2017. GEF Funding EESL's $454Mn Energy Efficiency Programme (Int'l)

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is reporting $454 million in funding to India's Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) Creating and Sustaining Markets for Energy Efficiency project. The project funding is comprised of a $20 million grant and co-financing of $434 million in the form of loans and equity, including a $200 million loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). EESL further proposes to build an `Energy Efficiency Revolving Fund' (EERF) for sustainable funding mechanism of energy efficiency projects in the country.

The EERF mechanism will support the 'proof of concept' investments for the new technologies of super-efficient ceiling fans, tri-generation technologies and smart grid-applications and ultimately scaling up energy efficiency financing and programme development to help cover initial investment costs of identified energy efficiency programmes like street lighting, domestic lighting, five-star rated ceiling fans and agricultural pumps.

The GEF project further brings together many technical and financing partners including United Nations Environment (UN Environment), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau (KfW). GEF is an international partnership of 183 countries, international institutions, civil society organizations and the private sector that addresses global environmental issues.
