HyNetherlands Green Hydrogen Scheme Planned (Int'l. Report)
Engie SA
Date: 2022-05-13
French multinational utility Engie SA, along with Europe's largest methanol produce OCI, and EEW is reporting their collaboration on the HyNetherlands (HyNL) project in Groningen province, the Netherlands. The project will produce e-methanol by combining hydrogen generated by offshore wind and biogenic carbon dioxide.

The project will initially incorporate a new 100MW electrolyser facility that will produce hydrogen for e-methanol production and deliver renewable-based hydrogen to the transpotation and industrial sectors. Electrolyser production capacity will be increased to 1.85GW in the early 2030s.

The Engie hydrogen production site will be located on the site of the Eems power plant in Eemshaven, with the electrolyser powered by 200MW of offshore wind. The EEW carbon capture plant will be integrated with the existing waste-to-energy plant in Farmsum and will capture biogenic CO2 from the flue gases of the plant's production lines.

OCI's BioMCN methanol facility in Farmsum has the capacity to combine hydrogen and biogenic CO2 to produce e-methanol. The Engie and OCI/BioMCN plants will be connected to the hydrogen network that Gasunie is developing in the Netherlands and Northern Germany. . Ohio State Plans $44Mn in Energy Efficiency Projects (Ind. Report)
Ohio State University
Date: 2021-08-16
In Columbus, The Ohio State University reports it plans to start work on more than $44 million in energy system improvements. The project, which will upgrade 40 of the Ohio State Campuses 100 or more academic, administration, medical, athletic and student residence buildings, is pending approval by the Board of Trustees this week. This will be the fourth of five phases of energy efficiency measures that are part of the Ohio State Energy Partners (OSEP) program.

The projects, which are guided by building-specific energy audits performed in 2020 include: changing heating and cooling elements in campus buildings; optimizing air-handling and airflow; and upgrading fans and pumps for optimally efficient circulation, and others, all of which are expected to reduce annual energy consumption for the optimized buildings by an average of more than 25 pct when completed.

To date, Ohio State Energy Partners has:

  • Converted a total of 107,000 indoor light fixtures and 1,700 outdoor light fixtures to energy-efficient LED technology over the past two years.

  • Completed the deployment of smart energy meters on campus -- now totaling more than 750 electricity, natural gas, steam and chilled water meters -- which are linked to a custom-built Digital Platform that allows ENGIE and Ohio State to monitor the utility system infrastructure and campus-wide energy consumption.

  • Completed infrastructure improvements to support utility systems for facilities around the "Oval" within the Arts District and for health sciences facilities. (Source: The Ohio State University, Ohio State News, 16 Aug., 2021) Contact: The Ohio State University, www.osu.edu

    Date: 2020-11-06
London-headquartered ENGIE UK reports it has been appointed by Sutton Housing Partnership (SHP) to use its recently launched whole house retrofit model "ENGIE Zero" to design, build and deliver a programme to transform existing properties across London into energy efficient, low maintenance, net-zero carbon homes.

ENGIE Zero offers a one-stop-shop for local authorities, housing associations and registered providers to decentralise, digitalise, decarbonise and increase home energy efficiency. Energy efficiency measures will include an airtight wrap to the eight selected properties, as well as installing a pre-fabricated super-insulated facade and roof system with integrated solar PV panels to generate electricity at the point of use. New high-performance windows and doors, air source heat pumps will also introduce renewable heating and a real-time monitoring and maintenance programme.

Planning approval has been granted and ENGIE will begin construction over the coming months, according to the release. (Source: ENGIE UK, PR, PBD Today, 6 Nov., 2020) Contact: ENGIE UK, James Cook, Divisional Director , +44 20 7320 8600, www.engie.co.uk

ENGIE EPS Launches Greek Hydrogen Energy Storage System (Int'l.)
    ENGIE
    Date: 2020-10-19
French energy giant ENGIE EPS has unveiled a hydrogen-based, renewable energy storage system built with its proprietary technology in Agkistro, Greece. The system will supply energy to an independent agri-food processing unit using energy from the nearby renewable energy developer Horizon-owned hydroelectric plant to produce hydrogen, which will be then stored and used for power generation as needed.

The system consists of a hydrogen power-to-power system made by an electrolyser, converting electricity into hydrogen power-to-gas and a fuel cell system, converting hydrogen stored in large quantities back to electricity gas-to-power. Recycling Wind Turbine Blades Project Underway (Ind. Report)
    Wind Blade,Engie,LM Wind
    Date: 2020-10-05
A consortium of wind energy players including LM Wind Power and Engie, has announced the Zero wastE Blade Research (ZEBRA) project with plans to design and construct the first 100 pct recyclable wind turbine and blades. Driven by French research center IRT Jules Verne, the project aims to demonstrate on a full scale the technical, economic, and environmental relevance of thermoplastic wind turbine blades, with an eco-design approach to facilitate recycling. The 42-month project has budget of $21.8 million.

LM Wind Power will desig , process, and manufacture two prototype recyclable wind turbine blades using Arkema's Elium resin to test and validate the composite material's feasibility for industrial production. In parallel, the ZEBRA project partners will focus on developing and optimizing the manufacturing process by using automation to reduce energy consumption and waste from production.

The team will then explore methods to recycle the materials used in the prototype blades into new products. (Source: LM Wind, Inceptive Mind, Oct., 2020)Contact: LM Wind Power, www.lmwindpower.com; ENGIE, www.engie-fabricom.com/en
