USN Produces Jet Fuel from Cellulosic Feedstocks (Ind. Report)

Researchers from the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) in China Lake, California have developed an efficient three-step process for the conversion of cellulosic feedstocks to both a valuable chemical precursor and high-performance jet fuel blendstock. Their paper appears in the journal ChemSusChem.

In it, the team describes the synthesis of sustainable methylcyclopentadiene and dimethyldicyclopentadiene (DMDCPD) via a three-step process consisting of aldol condensation; catalytic chemoselective hydrogenation; and dehydration.

KY County Seeks Landfill Gas-to-Energy Operator (Ind. Report)

In the Bluegrass State, Daviess Fiscal Court -- the Daviess county administration agency -- reports it is in negotiations with respondents to its recent RFP for methane gas capture and power production at the Daviess County Landfill.

Currently, the 20 gas wells underneath the landfill produce almost 3.9 million gpd of methane which could be significantly increased with the addition of more wells, the county notes.

In 2009, the county negotiated a 20-year contract with E.ON U.S., the corporation that operated Kentucky Utilities and Louisville Gas & Electric Co, in the hopes that they could generate $2 million over the course of the contract. Ultimately, E.ON U.S. was purchased by PPL Corp., and due to a then low market the deal fell through. Rampion Plans Sussex UK Wind Farm Expansion (Int'l Report)

In the UK, the BBC is reporting the £1.3 billion Rampion Offshore Wind Farm has applied to the Crown Estate, the royal company which owns the seabed, for permission to almost double the size of its facilities off the Sussex coast westwards towards Bognor.

If the proposed expansion is approved and completed, the Rampion wind farm could stretch over 16 miles and generate generates enough electricity to power 350,000sufficient energy for as many as 700,000 homes.

E.ON and RWE Renewables are reporting the inking of a 2.5-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for more than 20 offshore and onshore wind farms in the UK.

The deal covers 892MW of wind generation and includes a proportion of the London Array offshore wind farm originally constructed by E.ON as part of its £3.3 billion investment in UK renewables.

European Energy Efficient Mortgage in Planning Stage (Ind. Report)

Meeting in Brussels, the European Mortgage Industry -- including 47 key lending institutions, 17 national, European and International authorities and relevant market stakeholders -- is reportedly preparing to launch an Energy Efficient Mortgages Initiative (EEMI) pilot and are mobilizing European and global mortgage markets with a view to channeling private financing to "green" the building stock in the EU and beyond.

The Energy Efficient Mortgages Action Plan (EeMAP) Initiative -- led by the European Mortgage Federation-European Covered Bond Council (EMF-ECBC), Ca' Foscari University of Venice, RICS, the Europe Regional Network of the World Green Building Council, E.ON and SAFE Goethe University Frankfurt -- aims to create an energy efficient mortgage through which home purchasers are incentivized to improve the energy efficiency of their building or acquire an already energy efficient property by way of favourable conditions linked to the mortgage.

The assumption is that energy efficiency has a risk mitigation effect for banks as a result of the impact on a borrower's ability to service his/her loan and on the value of the property, a correlation which the EeMAP Initiative will seek to substantiate. Vestas Claims German "Lighthouse" Wind Project (Int'l Report)

Danish global wind turbine manufacturer Vestas reports receipt of an order from German utility E.ON's Avacon Natur subsidiary for a 29 MW wind power plant at a steel production facility in Lower Saxony.

The order is a "lighthouse project" due to its location and limited space on the steel producer's premises, according to Avacon Natur. To accommodate, Vestas will develop specific transportation and installation solutions as well as engineer, procure and construct turbines, foundations, roads and crane pads for the site-specific approach. The project will generate roughly 75 GWh per year -- sufficient power for over 20,000 German households. E.on Touts 440-MW Rio Grande Valley Wind Project (Ind Report)

E.on Climate and Renewables North America is reporting plans to invest $500 million in the construction of "Big Raymond", a 440-MW wind farm across Willacy, Cameron and Hidalgo counties in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. The new project will incorporate between 180 and 220 turbines and is expected to break ground this year for a late 2020 commissioning and startup.

Austin Energy which will buy 200MW of Big Raymond's capacity over 12 years.

Operating wind farms in the Rio Grande Valley include: Los Vientos I -- 87 turbines, 200MW; Los Vientos II -- 84 turbines, 202MW; San Roman -- 31 turbines, 93MW; Cameron Wind -- 55 turbines, 165MW; Bruenning's Breeze -- 76 turbines, 228MW; Magic Valley -- 112 turbines, 203MW; and Palmas Altas (which is underconstruction with 46 turbines, 145MW. EnBW Plans Solar Business, PPA Expansion (Int'l Report)

Karlsruhe, Germany-headquartered developer-utility EnBW is reporting a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for a subsidy-free solar park to be commissioned by the end of 2020 east of Rostock with developer and operator Energiekontor. The utility also announced plans to build a 175 MW solar park in Weesow-Willmersdorf, Germany. The two projects are in keeping with the company's plans to expand its energy trading and solar power business sectors. The utility presently operates 100 MW of solar power and has 800 MW in the pipeline.

Unlike its larger rivals RWE and E.ON, which have embarked on major corporate restructuring, EnBW has decided against a drastic upheaval, instead focusing on renewables and power and gas grids. Utility giant E.ON is reporting plans to construct and operate Europe's largest photovoltaic system on the rooftops of two Audi Hungaria logistic centres in Gyor, Hungary. RWE's E.ON-Innogy Acquisition Awaiting EC Approval (Int'l, M&A)

German energy group RWE AG reports it has filed its planned acquisition of the renewable energy business of both E.ON SE and Innogy SE with the European Commission (EC) for approval.

In March 2018, RWE agreed to sell its majority interest in Innogy to E.ON, while keeping Innogy's renewables business and merging it with E.ON's green assets. If approved, RWE will own a 8.6-GW renewable energy portfolio in a new company with three operating divisions. With the transaction, RWE will hold a 16.7 pct equity stake in E.ON.

Edinburgh Hotel Opts for Li-Ion Battery Power (Int'l. Report)

In Scotland, the 200-room, Gyle Premier Inn at Edinburgh Park is reporting the installation of a five-tonne , 3m cubed lithium-ion battery that is expected to shave £20,000 a year off its energy bill, as well as cut the facility's carbon emissions by half by 2025.

Electricity company E.ON has supplied and installed the technology at the hotel and will be remotely managing the battery's workload and efficiency from its energy management center in Glasgow. (Source: BBC News, Jan., 2019)

Company eyes far SW Indiana county for wind farm project

MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) — A Texas company is eyeing southwestern Indiana for a proposed 200-megawatt wind farm. E.ON Climate & Renewables North America wants to erect up to 81 wind turbines in Posey County in the state's far southwestern corner. Karsen Rumpf is the wind development manager for the Austin, Texas-based company. He says the project's scope and timetable depends on how many landowners are interested in leasing property for the turbines and the right-of-way for access roads to them.Construction of the wind farm could begin in 2020 , subject to Posey County planning authority approval. E.ON to Construct 475-MW Swedish Onshore Wind Farm (Int'l)

German utility giant E.ON SE reports it will construct one Europe's largest onshore wind farms following the company's previously announced decision to invest in the 475-MW Nysater project to be built in Sweden.

For the project, E.ON will partner with Swiss investment manager Credit Suisse Energy Infrastructure Partners (CSEIP), which will hold an 60 pct stake in the project which is expected to commissioned by the end of 20121.

E.ON will construct and operate the wind farm under a long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) agreement while retaining a 20 pct ownership take in the project. Nordex will supply the €500 million ($570 million) project's 114 wind turbines ranging from 3.9 MW to 4.4 MW . Rampion Offshore Wind Farm Nearing Commissioning (Int'l)

In the UK, the BBC is reporting the £1 billion, Rampion offshore wind farm off Brighton is expected to come online within months. When fully operational, the 116-turbine project will generate sufficient electric power for approximately 350,000 homes.

The Rampion project is the first offshore wind project on the south coast and is two-thirds the size of the 175-turbine London Array, the biggest offshore wind farm in the world. Rampion is a JV between E.ON, which developed the project, Canadian energy company Enbridge and a consortium of US, Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund and Macquarie Capital. E.On, Google Touting Sunroof Platform for UK Households (Int'l)

E.On and Google are reporting a partnership to bring their Sunroof platform to British households in the coming weeks. The Sunroof platform uses Google Earth and Google Maps, 3D models and machine learning to provide an accurate estimate of a home's individual solar potential.

As in Germany, E.On will be the first energy company in Britain to offer its customers a digital assessment of the PV potential of their homes.

Ultimately, Sunroof "translates" the determined amount of light into energy and the potential cost savings. Based on this data, customers in Germany can request a complete package consisting of a photovoltaic module and the E.ON SolarCloud, optionally with Aura battery storage. E.On also provides a "sunshine guarantee" to ensure that the solar system achieves the calculated yields, with lower values met with financial compensation by the company.

The two firms are also preparing a market launch in Italy, while the one-year programme in Germany will now be extended until the end of the year. Google launched Sunroof in the United States in 2015. The platform is currently covering approximately 60 million buildings. According to Google, around 79 pct of the roofs covered by the application were suitable for the installation of a solar power generator, while in the south of the country, their percentage reached 90 pct. BLUE PILOT to Cut Offshore Wind Const. Costs (New Prod & Tech)

The Carbon Trust is reporting the launch of BLUE PILOT, a large-scale demonstration project aimed at reducing costs and underwater noise during construction of offshore wind farms as part of the Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA). The BLUE PILOT project will deploy The BLUE Hammer, a new type of pile driver developed by Fistuca BV., a Dutch technology company founded as a spin-off from Eindhoven University of Technology.

It is anticipated that the project will enable potential lifetime savings of €33 -- €40 million for a 720MW offshore wind farm.

OWA partners E.ON, EnBW, Orsted, Statoil and Vattenfall, alongside additional industry partners Fistuca, Van Oord, Shell and Sif are contributing €3.2 million in project funding, while the Netherlands Enterprise Agency has granted public subsidies of over €2.5 million.

In the BLUE PILOT project the hammer will be tested offshore at a location in Dutch waters. Sif will provide the monopile, and Van Oord will support the installation logistics. The other industry partners will provide funding and strategic advice into the project to ensure its relevance to future commercial projects. E.ON Sells Partial Stake in 228-MW Texas Wind Farm (M&A)

German utility E.ON SE is reporting the December, 2017 sale of an unspecified stake in its 228-MW Bruenning's Breeze wind farm in Willacy County, Texas to a unit of JPMorgan Chase & Co and an unnamed investor. Financial details were not revealed.

The Bruenning's Breeze facility is powered by 76 Acciona AW-125 3.0 MW turbines that generate sufficient power for approximately 75,000 households. The deal enabled E.on Climate & Renewables to secure tax equity financing for the wind park in exchange for a partial interest in the facility, E.on said on Monday. It did not provide further details about the transaction, which was completed in December 2017. Arkona Offshore Wind Farm Phase-Two Construction Complete (Ind. Report)

E.ON and Statoil are reporting Construction of their €1.2 billion, JV 385 MW, Arkona offshore wind farm 35 kilometres northeast of the island of Rugen in the German Baltic Sea is progressing on schedule. According to Navigant Research, the total annual revenue for Energy Storage for Renewables Integration is expected to surpass $23 billion (€19.1 billion ) by 2026. The projected growth for utility-scale and behing-the-metre (BTM) applications is being fueled by the falling prices in solar, wind and energy storage, according to Navigant research analyst Adam Wilson.

Overall, energy storage systems (ESSs) are facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources without affecting grid reliability. Navigant Research noted that customers in the utility-scale and BTM markets are now offered greater flexibility in installing photovoltaic (PV) plants in combination with ESSs thanks to the expansion of solar power and the lower ESSs prices.
