Vertoro Rotterdam Cellulosic Ethanol Plant Funded (Int'l.)

Geleen, Netherland-based green technology company Vertoro is reporting receipt of €2 million in European Union "ReactEU" grant funding to develop a 250,000 metric tpy lignin crude biorefinery at Rotterdam.

The biorefinery will convert woody biomass -- industrial wood residues, sawdust and wastes -- into roughly 50,000 metric tpy of cellulosic ethanol and roughly 125,000 metric tpy of lignin-based "Goldilocks crude oil" which could be used as biofuel bunkers.

Vertoro is a spin off company from a 2017 public-private partnership between Brightlands Chemelot Campus, DSM, Chemelot InSciTe, University of Maastricht and Eindhoven University of Technology. Ithaca Energy Code Requires Net-Zero Const. by 2026 (Ind. Report)

In the Empire State, the City of Ithaca has adopted the Ithaca Energy Code Supplement (IECS) code requirements for new buildings and major renovations that will substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions while emphasizing affordability.

The rules, which will go into effect on August 4, 2021, require all new buildings be constructed to produce 40 pct fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than those built to NY State code. The IECS will become more stringent in 2023, requiring an 80 pct reduction in emissions. Starting in 2026, net-zero buildings that do not use fossil fuels will be required (with exceptions for cooking and process energy).

Partly due to broad community support and the increasing urgency of global climate change, Ithaca Common Council voted to accelerate the implementation timeline from the originally proposed step-up dates of 2025 and 2030.

The IECS offers flexibility for builders to comply using the prescriptive Easy Path, a customized point-based system, or the performance-based Whole Building Path. Using the Easy Path, GHG reductions are achieved from electrification of space and water heating (e.g., heat pumps), renewable energy (e.g., community solar), and affordability improvements which reduce construction costs (e.g., efficient building shape).

The IECS is an overlay to the state energy code, not a replacement, and is All other applicable code requirements must still be met. The Ithaca Energy Code Supplement is a major piece of the City's Green New Deal (GND) which aims to achieve an equitable transition to carbon-neutrality community-wide by 2030.

Amyris Announces $300Mn Public Offering Pricing (Ind. Report)

Emeryville, California-headquartered Amyris Inc., a leading synthetic biotechnology company active in the Clean Health and Beauty markets through its consumer brands and a top supplier of sustainable and natural ingredients, has announced the pricing of an underwritten public offering of an aggregate of 19,047,619 shares of its common stock at a public offering price of $15.75 per share, which consists of a secondary offering of 11,390,797 shares to be sold, in the aggregate, by DSM International B.V. and affiliates of Vivo Capital LLC (the selling stockholders) and 7,656,822 shares to be sold by Amyris.

Amyris will not receive any proceeds from the sale of shares in the secondary offering by the selling stockholders. The gross proceeds from the offering to Amyris, before deducting the underwriting discount and commissions and estimated offering expenses, and assuming no exercise of the underwriters' option to purchase additional shares, are expected to be approximately $120.6 million. J.P. Morgan Securities LLC and Cowen and Company, LLC are acting as the joint bookrunning managers for the offering.

Major Business Support for Biden Administration's Climate Action Plan (Opinions, Editorials & Aside)

On Tuesday, in an open letter organized by the We Mean Business coalition to President Biden, 310 businesses and investors with a footprint in the U.S. signed their support for the Biden administration's commitment to climate action and for setting a federal climate target to reduce emissions.

An excerpt from the letter states, "To restore the standing of the U.S. as a global leader, we need to address the climate crisis at the pace and scale it demands. Specifically, the U.S. must adopt an emissions reduction target that will place the country on a credible pathway to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. We, therefore, call on you to adopt the ambitious and attainable target of cutting GHG emissions by at least 50 pct below 2005 levels by 2030."

The letter demonstrates the U.S. business and investor communities' strong support for a highly ambitious 2030 emissions reduction target, or Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) pursuant to the Paris Agreement, in pursuit of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. Latest climate modeling shows that at least halving emissions by 2030 is achievable, and provides strong economic benefits. The Biden administration is expected to announce its NDC prior to the Leaders Summit on Climate.

Business signatories of the letter collectively represent over $3 trillion in annual revenue and employ nearly 6 million U.S. workers across all 50 states. They range in size from small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to large multinational corporations, and represent a number of industries. Investor signatories collectively represent more than $1 trillion in assets under management and include CalSTRS, the New York State Comptroller, the New York City Comptroller and the California State Controller's Office, among others.

"The U.S. business community is committed to doing its part to reduce emissions because it is good for the economy and helps us build back better. Solar EV Startup Touts $48Mn Funding Round (Ind. Report)

In the Netherlands, solar electric vehicle startup Lightyear is reporting it largest funding roud to date -- $48 million led by Zero Point Holding B.V. -- which will be used to support their growth and path towards the first customer deliveries of the company's first electric vehicle called the Lightyear One by the end of this year.

Lightyear One uses 5 square meters of integrated solar cells in the vehicles roof and hood and an efficient powertrain, high yield solar roof and an optimized thermal management system. for electric vehicles. The cells function independently, meaning they produce a higher yield compared to conventional solar cells, according to Lightyear. The Lightyear One can drive up to 55km (34 miles) per day on solar power alone.

Lightyear teamed up with Silicon Valley-based company SunPower Corporation, integrating the company's Maxeon solar cells onto conductive back sheet technology developed by Dutch life sciences company DSM. SunPower is an energy company that designs and manufactures crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells and solar panels based technology invented at Stanford University in California. UK Investing £150Mn for Rainforest Preservation (Int'l.)

In London, the UK has launched its new Mobilising Finance for Forests Programme, a £150 million fund to help protect rainforests equivalent to an area the size of Wales, cut millions of tonnes of carbon emissions and improve the lives of over 600,000 people in tropical forest communities across Africa, Asia and Latin America. The programme will support sustainable land-use projects and protect rainforest regions like the Amazon and Indonesian basins in communities vulnerable to climate change.

This funding will help to remove 28 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere, equivalent to the offsetting London's entire CO2 emissions annually over the next 15 years, through investing in eco-friendly projects like harvesting nuts, seeds, and coffee sustainably, restoring lost forests, diversifying crops to prevent soil erosion, and launching conservation activities -- restoring tropical forests as our most effective and natural carbon capture and storage sinks.

The government program is expected to attract as much as £850 million in private investment, support thousands of green jobs across multiple sectors, such as agriculture, food, and technology in these regions, and to provide 23 pct of the reduction in carbon emissions and climate impacts needed over the next decade to meet the goals set in the Paris Climate Agreement. Addressing the World Sustainable Development Summit this week in New Delhi, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reported his country was on track to meet its climate change mitigation commitments.

The Minister noted India increased renewable energy capacity by 162 pct over the past five years, expanded access to clean cooking fuel to cover over 80 million households for energy savings of about 47 billion kWh per year and a 38 million tpy reduction in CO2 emissions.

In the Netherlands, Royal DSM and Espoo, Finland-based renewable fuels specialist Neste Oy are reporting a partnership for the production of high-performance plastics from sustainable feedstock. Under the agreement, DSM Engineering Materials in Troy, Michigan will start replacing a significant portion of the fossil feedstock used to date in the manufacture of its engineering resins with feedstock produced from recycled waste plastics and/or 100 pct bio-based hydrocarbons.

Over the short term, the collaboration aims to replace several thousand tons of fossil feedstock in the production of polymers with alternative, sustainable feedstock: biobased and waste plastic based hydrocarbons.

Neste produces its biobased hydrocarbons entirely from renewable raw materials, such as waste and residue oils and fats. For the production of waste plastic derived feedstock, Neste focuses on plastics that cannot be mechanically recycled and have previously been directed to incineration and landfilling. UK-Wide Carbon Markets Join Forces (Int'l. Report)

Two key UK-wide carbon markets -- the UK Woodland Carbon Registry and UK Peatland Code -- report they have joined forces to form the new UK Land Carbon Registry, a 'one-stop-shop' for woodland and peatland carbon schemes.

To date, 526 woodland creation projects have registered with the new Woodland Carbon Code, with 40 pct being in Scotland. This represents a doubling of projects compared to the past year alone and these registered projects are predicted to sequester over eight million tonnes CO2 over their lifetime.

"This new joint registry will support nature-based solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises. This builds on our existing support for the domestic carbon market, driven by our Woodland Carbon Guarantee scheme which provides landowners additional long-term income for capturing carbon through new woodlands. PA. DEP Offers Business, Farm Energy Efficiency Grants (Grants)

In Harrisburg, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) reports the availability of grant funding for energy-efficient equipment, such as boilers, LED lighting, Energy Star HVAC systems and others for small business owners and farmers through the Small Business Advantage Grant program.

Pennsylvania farmers and other small business owners with 100 or fewer full-time employees are eligible for the grants. Projects must save the business a minimum of $500 and 25 pct annually in energy consumption or pollution related expenses. Businesses can apply for 50 pct matching funds for equipment or materials, up to $7,000, when adopting energy-efficient or pollution prevention equipment or processes.

Applications are considered on a first come, first served basis, and will be accepted until fiscal year 2020-21 funds are exhausted, or Monday, April 12, 2021, whichever occurs first. Vertoro Announces Lignin 'Green Oil' Production Pilot (Int'l.)

Bio-based Dyneema Effort Announced (Int'l. Report)

Royal DSM, SABIC, and UPM Biofuels report they are joining forces to help reduce the environmental footprint of Royal DSM's Dyneema -- "the world's strongest fibre" -- and see Dyneema transition to bio-based feedstock leveraging Saudi Arabia-based SABIC's TRUCIRCLE solutions for certified renewable products.

The Dyneema bio-based material will be ISCC Plus certified and is expected to be available from April 2020.

Finland-based UPM Biofuels produces bio-based feedstock UPM BioVerno from the residue of the pulping process. This is then processed by SABIC to make renewable ethylene. TRUCIRCLE includes certified renewable products, specifically resins and chemicals from bio-based feedstock that are not in competition with the food chain and help to reduce carbon emissions. By applying a mass balancing approach, DSM is then able to create bio-based Dyneema fibre, according to the DSM release. Kingston, NY Opts for 2,400 LED Streetlights (Ind. Report)

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) and the City of Kingston recently announced the start of installation of LED streetlights throughout the city as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Smart Street Lighting NY program. The project will save the city more than $200,000 annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 570 tons per year. Smart Street Lighting NY is a statewide program that calls for at least 500,000 streetlights throughout the state to be replaced with LED technology by 2025.

The nearly $1.4 million upgrade, financed and implemented by NYPA, includes the replacement of 2,400 streetlights throughout the city with energy-saving LED fixtures, improving lighting quality and neighborhood safety while reducing energy and maintenance costs. Installation will begin next week and is expected to complete during the summer. Michigan Anaerobic Biodigester Nears Commissioning (Ind. Report)

The city of Grand Rapids, Mich, (pop. 200,000 +-) is reporting construction of its $57 million wastewater treatment plant anaerobic biodigestion facility is nearing completion and commissioning.

The biodigester facility includes 3 tanks with a total capacity of 1.4 million gallons. Two tanks will be used for municipal biosolids and the other tank is an anaerobic membrane bioreactor to quickly reduce food waste and other organic waste to energy and increase energy efficiency. The project is part of the city's effort to use 100 pct renewable energy to power city buildings by 2025. Cuomo Announces $1.5Bn in Energy Efficiency Funding (Ind. Report)

In Albany, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) Board of Trustees reports approval of $1.5 billion over seven years in additional program funding for energy efficiency as part of the Governor's BuildSmartNY program.

The funding will support a wide variety of energy technology and renewable energy services, including energy audits, project engineering, design, installation and construction management. This strategic support will ensure that NYPA continues to meets its goal of substantially reducing energy usage by investing $300 million annually on energy efficiency and renewable measures at public facilities.

BuildSmartNY energy efficiency projects include high efficiency lighting retrofits, occupancy and day-lighting and lighting sensors, building and energy management systems, boilers, chillers, air-handling systems, thermal storage, micro-grids, solar photovoltaic systems, digester gas systems, and emerging energy technologies.

Danes Developing Shipboard DecarbonICE CCS System (Int'l.)

A group of world leading maritime shipping companies and ship builders, including NYK, Sovcomflot, DSM and others, are reported to have joined forces with the København, Denmark-based Maritime Development Center to develop DecarbonICE, an on-board carbon capture and storage (CCS)solution.

The DecarbonICE concept captures ship exhaust CO2 and other GHGs in a cryogenic process and turns it into dry ice. Proven offshore technology is then applied during normal ship operations to transport the dry ice into the seafloor sediments for permanent sequestration as liquid CO2 and CO2 hydrate.

In combination with future carbon neutral fuels like biofuels and electro fuels, the DecarbonICE technology can create carbon negative shipping and thus contribute to atmospheric carbon reduction at a significantly lower cost than shore-based CCS. capture.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based POET-DSM Advanced Biofuel reports it is temporarily halting production of cellulosic biofuels at its Emmetsburg, Iowa, facility due in part to the uncertainties surrounding the EPA's Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) policies.

The company, a 50/50 joint venture between Royal DSM and POET, LLC., will now focus on R&D aimed at improving mechanical reliability, creating additional technological efficiencies and licensing technologies in countries that support the use of low carbon fuels from crop residue and other biomass, according to the company. New York Woody Biomass Heating System Commissioned (Ind. Report)

In the Empire State, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Adirondack Park Agency, and New York State Police are reporting the commissioning of a woody biomass pellet-fired heating system at the State Office Campus in Ray Brook.

The $3 million project, developed in partnership with DEC, State Police, APA, the New York Power Authority and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), supports Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's (D) BuildSmart NY program, which calls for a 20 pct reduction in energy consumption by all state agencies by 2020. The installation is also expected to cut annual energy costs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 391 tpy.

In a joint press release from the United Nations Global Compact, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the We Mean Business have committed themselves to more ambitious climate targets aligned with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degree C above pre-industrial levels and reaching net-zero emissions by no later than 2050. The joint commitment from the coalition 28 companies with a total market capitalization of $1.3 trillion heeds the most recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which warned of catastrophic consequences should global warming exceed 1.5 degree C.

POET CEO Broin Scores Bioeconomy Leadership Award (Ind. Report)

On Thursday, April 4, POET CEO and Founder Jeff Broin was recognized with a Bioeconomy Leadership Award award for his vision and leadership in pioneering new technology and building POET into the world's largest biofuel producer. Ithaca NY Updates Green Building Policy Report (Ind. Report)

Since the City of Ithaca and the Town of Ithaca adopted its final Green Building Policy (GBP) report in May 2018, the city has been preparing for,and is now implementing PhaseTwo: drafting legislation based on the policy recommendations contained in the GBP report.

To that end the city will continue regular meetings with consultants and working groups; develop details related to off-site location will also be developed and delivered to the Town/City governing bodies for final adoption.

Shell Supplying Dutch Maritime Biofuel Pilot Project (Int'l Report)

In the Netherlands, A.P. Moller -- Maersk A/S reports its is partnering with a group of Dutch multinationals, including Shell, in a maritime biofuels pilot program that will see one of Maersk's giant Triple E container ships sail 25.000 nautical miles from Rotterdam to Shanghai and back on a blend of up to 20 pct sustainable second-generation Biofuels.

The fuel blend, which will eliminate 1.5 million kg of CO2 and 20,000 kg of sulfur emissions, is being supplied by Shell which, along with the other partners in the project -- Friesland Campina, Heineken, Philips, DSM, and Unilever -- is a member of the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition (DSGC).
