Hydrostor, NRStor Complete Goderich A-CAES Facility (Ind. Report)

Toronto-based Hydrostor, a developer of Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage (A-CAES) projects, in partnership with energy storage project developer NRStor, also of Toronto, has announced completion of the Goderich A-CAES compressed-air energy storage facility in Goderich, Ontario.

The first-of-its-kind utility-scale Goderich A-CAES Facility is commercially contracted to Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) for peaking capacity and ancillary services to support grid reliability.

MP Power Seeks Indian Grid-Scale Energy Storage Bids (Int'l Report)

Reporting from Mumbai, MP Power Management Company, the Madhya Pradesh state government's holding firm for three power distribution companies , is calling for expressions of interest from domestic and global players for the establishment of 500 MW with 8 hours of continuous discharge of grid-scale energy storage service, microgrid and a storage manufacturing facility in the state. The tender call notes the energy storage options could be in the form of chemical batteries (lithium ion, advanced lead acid, sodium sulphur, flow batteries), pumped storage hydro, compressed air energy storage, flywheels or other forms of storage.

1,000-MW Utah Energy Storage Project Announced (Ind. Report)

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and Holloday, Utah-based Magnum Development are reporting plans to develop 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy storage in a Magnum-owned salt cavern in central Utah.

The two firm's Advanced Clean Energy Storage (ACES) project will deploy four types of energy storage technologies at utility scale, which include renewable hydrogen, compressed air energy storage, large-scale flow batteries, and solid oxide fuel cells.

The project is sited adjacent to the coal-fired Intermountain Power Project and will connect with the Western US power grid using existing infrastructure, according to the company. Hydrostor Touts Aussie Compressed Air Energy Storage (Ind. Report)

Toronto-headquartered advanced compressed air energy storage (A-CAES) specialist Hydrostor Inc. is reporting its subsidiary, Hydrostor Australia Pty Ltd, has been awarded a combined total of $9 million in grant funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Government of South Australia in support of the 5 MW project. Australia's first A-CAES project is slated for construction at the site of a mothballed mine near Adelaide.

Storelectric Raises £1Mn for Compressed Air Energy Storage (Int'l)

Lancashire, UK-based compressed air energy storage specialist Storelectric Ltd. is reporting receipt of £1 million in additional funding from green tech investors 350PPM alongside employees from a major US institution.

According to the company's website, Storelectric's Compressed Air Energy Storage enables a surplus of wind or solar power to be stored underground where the surplus energy is used to store air in salt caverns, a type of underground reservoir. 31 Utilities Added Energy Storage Project in 2016 (Ind. Report)

According to a recent Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) survey, 71 utilities report having at least one energy storage installation deployed in their service territory at the end of 2016 and 80 pct of utility respondents reported they are currently implementing or considering energy storage to defer grid investments. Within that group, 31 utilities said they deployed their first energy storage project last year.

According to 155 utility survey respondents, 207 megawatts/257 MWh of energy storage were added to the grid last year, across 829 systems. Residential deployments accounted for 4.5 megawatts/7.5 MWh; non-residential deployments accounted for 54 megawatts/68 MWh and utility-owned deployments totaled 151 megawatts/181.6 MWh.

Utilities provided cumulative and 2016 data on energy storage installations interconnected in their service territories prior to December 31, 2016. Energy storage installations included in the results include batteries, flow batteries, kinetic energy storage (such as flywheels), supercapacitors, and compressed air energy storage. The survey did not include pumped hydropower, thermal energy storage, or electric vehicles. Floating Compressed Air Energy Storage System Being Developed in Malta (New Prod & Tech)

The University of Malta Department of Mechanical Engineering reports it is developing a compressed air energy storage technology integrated into a floating platform that can support a number of offshore systems, including wind turbines.

The Floating Liquid-piston Accumulator using Seawater under Compression (FLASC) uses a double-chamber compressed air system for large-scale energy storage in the offshore environment. The dual chamber concept eliminates wide pressure and temperature fluctuations.

The FLASC concept developers -- Dr. Daniel Buhagiar during his Ph.D. research under the supervision of Prof. Ing. Tonio Sant -- are planning to construct a small-scale prototype for deployment later this year. Development of the prototype is being carried out in partnership with Medserv plc., with support from the Institute for Sustainable Energy of the University of Malta.
