ClearFlame Engine, John Deere Partner to Cut Emissions (Ind. Report)

Moline, Illinois-headquartered John Deere reports it is working with Geneva, Illinois-based ClearFlame Engine Technologies is to replace diesel fuel with ethanol in trucks, tractors, combines, excavators, and other heavy equipment thus reducing emissions. Deere will supply one of its commonly used heavy-duty diesel engines for ClearFlame lab tests followed by road testing.

According to ClearFlame, "The partnership with Deere and the investment from Deere is going to allow us to move that over to one of their engine platforms, for a range of applications like agriculture and construction, do an engine demo with them, and then towards the end of next year ideally translate that into an actual field demo of the technology on a piece of equipment."

ClearFlame's unique engine technology enables low-carbon, renewable fuels such as ethanol to be easily integrated into existing diesel engine platforms, offering a lower-emission, lower-cost solution than diesel fuel. A ClearFlame-enabled engine meets the performance and efficiency requirements for diesel engines while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter, helping to improve air quality and mitigate climate change, according to the company. ClearFlame Engine Tech. Secures $17Mn to Decarbonize Long-Haul Trucking (Ind. Report)

Geneva, Illinois-headquartered ClearFlame Engine Technologies, a startup dedicated to the development of net-zero engine technology, reports it has secured $17 million in Series A financing led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Mercuria, John Deere and Clean Energy Ventures. The funding will help enable commercialization of the company's innovative engine technology for the long-haul trucking, agriculture and power generation sectors.

ClearFlame's unique engine technology enables low-carbon, renewable fuels such as ethanol to be easily integrated into existing diesel engine platforms, offering a lower-emission, lower-cost solution than diesel fuel. A ClearFlame-enabled engine meets the performance and efficiency requirements for diesel engines while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter, helping to improve air quality and mitigate climate change.

ClearFlame previously received $4 million in non-dilutive and grant funding from the Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas and Illinois Corn Growers Associations, the National Science Foundation, the US DOE and others. The company completed its $3 million Series Seed financing in early 2020, led by Clean Energy Ventures.

ClearFlame Engine Technologies, Alto Ingredients Partner to Demonstrate Decarbonization of Diesel-Fueled Engines Using Ethanol Fuel (Ind. Report)

Geneva, Illinois-based ClearFlame Engine Technologies, a growing startup dedicated to the development of clean engine technology today announced a partnership with Alto Ingredients, Inc.-- fka Pacific Ethanol -- a leading producer of specialty alcohols and essential ingredients, to conduct pilot demonstrations of its proven solution for diesel engines using low-cost ethanol in Class VIII trucks.

ClearFlame will provide Alto with a Class VIII truck retrofitted with a 500hp heavy-duty demonstration engine which can match diesel torque and efficiency by achieving true diesel-style combustion of any decarbonized fuel. In turn, Alto will provide fuel and fleet support enabling real-world on-road testing. ClearFlame anticipates its engine running on ethanol can reduce GHG vehicle emissions by more than 45 pct and offer an estimated 15-30 pct TCO savings when compared with a diesel-fueled solution.

ClearFlame's technology enables low-carbon and carbon-negative fuels to be easily integrated into existing diesel engine platforms, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective solution than diesel fuel while utilizing existing liquid fuel infrastructure. It provides the same performance, efficiency, and rugged practicality associated with diesel engines, while eliminating the need for complex after treatment solutions. By replacing 100 pct of the petroleum fuel used with decarbonized fuels such as ethanol.

ClearFlame's engine technology significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, particulate matter and smog, helping to meet stringent emissions regulations while reducing overall engine cost. Kirk Roller Joins ClearFlame as Business Dev. VP (Ind. Report)

With more than 35 years in the renewable energy and high-tech industries, Kirk has diverse experience providing business strategy and guidance to startups and early-stage companies. Most recently, he served as a consultant for Hyliion and Terminus AI where he led business development and regulatory compliance. Roller also held leadership positions in sales and marketing at Hyliion, Cenergestic and CommScope as well as led sales and business development efforts for the solar industry, supporting building management and infrastructure development.

"There is a great need in heavy-duty applications (e.g. long-haul trucking, construction, agriculture, marine and back-up power generation) for technologies that provide diesel-like performance but which are decoupled from the dirty emissions of diesel fuel. ClearFlame's mission is to break the bond between diesel engines and their fuel to create the fastest path to a sustainable future, equitably distributed to all the places that might be initially under-served by alternative solutions.

Electrification is important, but it requires extensive infrastructure expansion. This is expensive and will take decades, and until that expansion is complete, little benefit is achieved in reducing climate change or improving air quality in the front-line communities that are harmed most by pollution. We cannot wait that long.

"We believe the solution is our technology allows climate-friendly, renewable, decarbonized fuels to be used at the highest possible efficiency. Our technology can be adopted quickly. It uses existing liquid refueling infrastructure, and operators get the performance they expect while also relying on the existing base of engine technicians for service. Our solution provides "near-zero" emissions that are an order of magnitude better than even the cleanest diesel-fueled engines and is the fastest way for reducing CO2 emissions from heavy-duty engines. "Low carbon, renewable fuels are generally characterized as low in reactivity as measured by cetane number. These alternative fuels have historically required use of spark-ignited engines which have lower efficiency and are bore-size limited compared to compression ignition (Diesel) engines. These fuels were thought to be incompatible with compression ignition engines which traditionally require easily ignitable fuels.

ClearFlame uses a high-temperature combustion system that overcomes cetane limitations. We are using insulation strategies and calibration changes like reduced charge air cooling and increased EGR to increase combustion temperatures just enough so that lower cetane fuels like alcohols will ignite reliably with short ignition delays. There is no fuel blending, no spark plugs and no petroleum. The ClearFlame combustion process leverages the no/low soot characteristics of alternative bio or e-fuels and produces engine-out exhaust with ultra-low PM levels that does not require a DPF. Further, because the engine is no longer smoke-limited, the air-fuel ratio is changed from lean to stoichiometric using "clean" EGR for dilution at lower loads, improving volumetric efficiency/power density, and leaving an exhaust stream suitable for 3-way catalysis. The SCR after-treatment system can be eliminated in favor of a 3-way catalytic converter allowing a substantial cost reduction and improvement in NOx reduction efficiency. DEF/AdBlue/urea is no longer required and system reliability is improved.

The value added by being able to change fuels is tremendous because a very high efficiency combustion process can now be paired with use of 100 pct renewable, clean fuels providing a combination that surpasses all other alternatives in terms of CO2 mitigation, reduced criteria emissions and lower costs.

ClearFlame Engine Technologies recognizes the importance of developing renewably-fueled combustion-based alternatives that complement electrification enabling sustainability in applications where liquid fuels will remain necessary.

ClearFlame Engine Tech. Newest RFA Member (Ind. Report)

The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) is reporting Chicago-based ClearFlame Engine Technologies has become their newest member. The company provides a patented set of modifications allow diesel engines to operate on 100 pct ethanol fuel as a substitute for petroleum diesel fuel.

ClearFlame notes that opening the current diesel fuel market to use 100 pct ethanol fuel has the potential to add massive additional ethanol demand over time -- 50 percent replacement of all diesel fuel would require 34 billion gallons of additional ethanol fuel.
