Minship Bulk Carrier Trialing Marine Biofuel (Int'l. Report)

Bavarian ship management company Minship and its subsidiary Minmarine reports its bulk carrier ship Trudy recently completed a trial bunkering in Rotterdam GoodFuels' sustainable Bio-fuel Oil MR1-100 -- a second generation sustainable biofuel produced from certified feedstock labelled as waste or residue.

For the 8-10 day trial, the GoodFuels biofuel will be the only fuel burnt in the main engine of Trudy. During the trial, 90 pct of the CO2 emissions produced will not be counted under existing regulations for measuring GHG emissions. The trial is part of Minshipseffort to address shipping emissions and climate change concerns.

In the Netherlands, Amsterdam-based sustainable marine biofuels specialist GoodFuels and Dordrecht-based diversified petroleum distribution firm based FinCo Fuel are reporting FinCo acquisition of GoodFuels.

Refiners Raise Clean Fuel to IMO Standard (Int'l. Report)

Reuters is reporting global oil refiners have "upgraded processing units and adjusted operations to raise output of low-sulphur residual fuels and marine gasoil (MGO) to prepare for stricter shipping fuel standards that kick in on Jan.1, 2020."

The new London-based International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards prohibit the use of fuels containing more than 0.5 pct sulphur, compared with 3.5 pct through the end of December, unless the ship is equipped with exhaust-cleaning "scrubbers".

The shipping industry consumes about 4 million bpd of marine bunker fuels, and the rule changes will impact more than 50,000 merchant ships globally, opening a significant new market for fuel producers. Mitsui Looks to Synthetic Methane to Cut Shipping Emissions (Int'l)

Tokyo-headquartered maritime shipping firm Mitsui O.S.K. (MOL) reports it will focus on reducing its shipping operation CO2 emissions by using synthetic methane as an alternative to current fossil-based bunker fuels.

With the same focus, the company has also joined the Carbon Capture and Reuse (CCR) Study Group which is looking into the implementation of effective carbon neutral measures to reduce the use of fossil fuels by offering alternative energies such as synthetic methane, which is generated by combining CO2 generated by industries with renewable energy-derived hydrogen. Methanol-Fueled Ship Launch Set for 2019 (Int'l)

In Singapore, the Business Times is reporting the first vessel in Asia to run on methanol is expected to set sail from Singapore in late 2019.

The expected "pilot" sailing is being funded in the amount of $200,000 by the not-for-profit global trade association Methanol Institute and Nanyang Technological University. The funding will cover the cost of retrofitting a conventional ship with an imported methanol-fuelled engine. GoodFuels Marine Fossil-Free Maritime Fuel Lauded (Ind. Report)

In Amsterdam, GoodFuels Marine is reporting its GoodShipping Program, which claims to be the world's first global initiative established to decarbonize shipping through the use of sustainable low carbon marine fuels, has enabled five pioneering shippers -- Tony's Chocolonely, Dopper, Blygold, Magic Marine and Mystic -- to collectively cut their carbon footprint by over 40 tons through the use of GoodFuels Marine's advanced, sustainable marine fuel.

The five shippers have also reduced local emissions of sulphur oxide (SOx), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and particulate matter (PM). When combined, emissions of these substances from vessels in port regions lead to over 60,000 premature deaths globally each year, according to researchers from the University of Delaware.

The GoodShipping Program , which requires shippers to commit to a reduction in their sea freight CO2 emissions, works on the premise that as all CO2 from container shipping is emitted into the same atmosphere, the means of mitigating these emissions is equally impactful, regardless of which vessels adopt biofuels over traditional bunker fuels -- or the amount of "drop in" biofuel that is added to the fuel tank, as long as it offsets the CO2 costs of transporting participating shippers' cargo.
