French multinational energy company EDF Group reports the re-branding of its US energy management businesses as part of efforts to strengthen its presence with commercial, industrial and institutional customers. The new brand -- Dalkia Energy Solutions -- is being launched via a subsidiary of EDF Group named Dalkia. Groom Energy Solutions and Aegis Energy Services, both US subsidiaries of EDF Group, will operate under the same banner.

Dalkia Energy Solutions will offer HVAC, LED lighting, cogeneration, building energy management systems and remote control services to enable customers in the distribution, health, hotel, housing and logistics sectors to reduce their energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

Dalkia Energy Solutions will also work with EDF Trading North America for wholesale and retail energy supply, EDF Renewables for large solar, wind power and energy storage installations. Salix Finances Edinburgh Energy Efficiency Upgrades (Int'l.)

In Scotland, the City of Edinburgh Council reports it has invested £1.6 million of London-based Salix Finance Ltd. funding -- £800,000 provided by the council and £800,000 matching funding from Salix -- in energy efficiency projects across several city schools. The work was carried out using the London RE:FIT (energy efficiency) framework.

The upgraded school technologies include: combined heat and power (CHP), LED lighting, boilers, and controls, all of which are expected to deliver better than £4 million in energy cost savings over the lifetime of the project.

The upgrades were made possible thanks to funding from Salix Finance, an independent, government-funded organisation that provides interest-free loans to the public sector for energy efficiency projects. In addition to the school improvements, the council upgraded Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) and completed projects such as LED lighting upgrades to both the Edinburgh bus station and Councils Assembly Rooms, CCTV monitor upgrades to the City Chamber, and others. DOE Awards Bldg. Energy Management R&D Funding (R&D, Funding)

In Washington, the U.S. DOE Office of Science is reporting the issuance of $1.05 million in grant funding to energy company ComEd, the University of Denver, Virginia Tech and software specialist BEM Controls. The funding is to support development of an energy internet that will enhance building energy management. occupants.

The award provides funding to commercialize a blockchain-based transactive energy platform developed by BEM Controls with funding from the DOE. Blockchains use multiple servers that operate like decentralized record-keeping and verification systems.

The BEM Controls software incorporates time-based energy management and control of interior spaces in buildings to achieve greater energy efficiency, reliability and resiliency. ComEd will use its Grid of the Future Lab to demonstrate the functionality of the system, which will be developed over three years. First Aussie Hospital Scores GBCA 4 Star Efficiency Rating (Int'l)

In the Land Down Under, the Royal Adelaide Hospital has become the first large-scale hospital complex in Australia to achieve a 4 Star Green Star -- Healthcare As Built rating from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA).

According to the World Green Building Council (WGBC), incorporating green design in hospital infrastructure can deliver an 8.5 pct reduction in hospital stays, 15 pct faster recovery rates, a 22 pct reduction in the need for pain medication and an 11 pct reduction in secondary infections. Green Star buildings also deliver significant savings, producing 62 pct fewer greenhouse gas emissions and using 66 pct less electricity than average Australian buildings.

The Royal Adelaide Hospital incorporates abundant natural daylight, 3.8 hectares of landscaped environment with internal themed courtyards, sky gardens across the hospital's nine levels, and a 1.6 hectare green space footprint within the hospital. Sprint initially implemented Yardi Proliphix in 2012 to reduce energy costs in its retail locations by 15 pct with an anticipated 18-month return on investment.

Sprint's new Yardi Proliphix implementations will cost Sprint less than a conventional standard programmable thermostat. Army Recognized for Energy Efficiency, Conservation (Ind. Report)

The Army base also completed effective proactive energy efficiency and building energy management systems and interactive energy conservation awareness initiatives that helped reduce the base's fiscal year 2016 energy intensity by 23.4 pct from the prior year, resulting in a utility savings of more than $583,000, despite an increase in building square footage of 35 percent. CARICOM Planning Regional Energy Efficiency Strategy (Int'l)

The Caribbean Community Countries (CARICOM) -- Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, The Bahamas, Belize, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago -- reports that member country representatives are slated to meet in Georgetown, Guyana, on March 30th to establish a Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code (REEBC) and minimum building energy efficiency standards based on recommendations by the consultancy firm Solar Dynamics' Development of Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) for public and commercial buildings. The meeting will also review the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) in an effort to adapt it, where necessary, and present for acceptance and adoption by member states as a Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code.

The CARICOM Energy Strategy calls for a 33 pct reduction in energy intensity to be applied in all CARICOM Member States by 2027. REEBC is expected to address: thermal performance requirements for walls, roofs and windows; day lighting, lamps and luminaire performance; energy performance of chillers and air distribution systems; the electrical wiring system; solar water heating; appliances; renewable energy; zoning of buildings, climate classification, building energy management systems, and others. UMN Claims Carbon Emissions Cutting Success (Ind. Report)

The University of Minnesota in Duluth reports it has cut its nearly 640,000 metric tons of emissions in 2008 to 492,121 metric tons in 2016, and is halfway to meeting its goal of reducing campus carbon emissions 50 percent by 2020.

The university's Twin Cities Campus Sustainability Committee has outlined the following strategies to reduce energy consumption by 2050: creating a combined power and heat plant; upgrading building energy management systems, implementing green building standards for new construction and reducing laboratory energy; installation of LED lights; and installation of more building green roofs. the school also plans to target energy consumption by laboratories which use 60 pct of the University's energy.
