Cincinnati-based GE Aviation and Paris-headquartered Safran report they are developing a new aircraft engine aimed at reducing emissions by more than 20 pct of today's levels and work on technologies compatible with sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and hydrogen.

Sustainable Aviation Fuels Buyers Alliance Launched (Ind. Report)
Sustainable Aviation Fuels Buyers Alliance
The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is reporting the launch of the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA) to accelerate the path to net zero aviation by driving investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), catalysing new SAF production and technological innovation and supporting member engagement in policy-making.
SABA's founding member companies include Boeing, BCG, Deloitte, JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft, Netflix and Salesforce.
Key aspects of SABA's work will include:
Education and Policy Support -- SABA will help members navigate the technical aspects of SAF and the SAF market, aviation emissions accounting, and the SAF policy landscape.
Technology Innovation -- SABA will assess emerging SAF technologies and work with like-minded organizations to help address barriers to scale and cost reduction.
Investment Opportunity -- SABA will establish a rigorous, transparent SAF certificate system enabling air transport customers -- not only aircraft operators -- to invest in high quality SAF to meet their ambitious climate goals.
According to RMI's managing director of climate intelligence Ned Harvey, "SABA will build on the strong foundation of these global efforts, and develop a system that enables SAF to grow at the same pace and scale that renewable electricity grew over the last decade. The benefits of investing in SAF will go beyond the aviation sector, creating vast new clean energy jobs and new, sustainable revenue sources for farmers and tech innovators."

Boeing Promises 100 pct SAF Fleet by 2030 (Ind. Report)
US aerospace giant Boeing has announced that all of its commercial planes will be certified and capable of flying on 100 pct sustainable fuels (SAF) by by 2030.
According to the Boeing release, it has been working with airlines, engine manufacturers and other industry interests to conduct biofuel test flights since 2008, gaining initial approval for sustainable fuels in 2011. In 2018, Boeing partnered with FedEx on the ecoDemonstrator flight-test programme which used a 777 Freighter to make the world's first commercial flight using 100 pct SAF. SAF reportedly
reduces lifecycle fuel emissions by up to 80 pct compared to traditional jet fuel, but under current regulations, planes are not permitted to fly with anything higher than a 50/50 blend of SAF and conventional fuel.

Boeing to Deliver 100 pct SAF-Biofuel Planes by 2030 (Ind. Report)
The world's largest aerospace company, Boeing, reports it will begin delivery of commercial airplanes capable of flying on 100 pct sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030.
Boeing flew the world's first 100 pct SAF fuels commercial flight in 2018.
Currently, biofuels are mixed directly with conventional jet fuel up to a 50/50 blend, which is the maximum allowed under current fuel specifications, according to the release.
The Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) reports commercial flying currently accounts for about 2 pct of all carbon dioxide emissions and about 12 pct of transport emissions,
80 pct of which are emitted from flights of over 930 miles .

Leading Edge Jet Center Offering SAF at Seattle BFI (Ind. Report)

In Seattle, Leading Edge Jet Center (LEJC) a provider of business aviation services throughout the Pacific Northwest, is reporting the the introduction of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to its Fixed Base Operator facility at the King County International Airport-Boeing Field in Seattle, Washington, one of the busiest general aviation airports in the United States.
The offering is in partnership with Ann Arbor, Michigan-based global aviation fuels and services provider Avfuel Corporation which last August announced it would supply 7,300 gallons of SAD to operators flying in and out of Jackson Hole Aviation airfield in a demo to encourage commercial-scale SAF production and use.

Boeing Releases 2020 Global Environment Report (Ind. Report)
U.S. aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing has released its 2020 Global Environment Report
highlighting how the company is sustainably designing and building products while conserving resources and reducing waste across its global operations. Among the reports highlights:
Boeing is developing new products with 15 pct to 25 pct greater efficiency, in support of the aerospace industry's goal to achieve carbon-neutral growth in 2020 and drive a 50 pct reduction in carbon emissions by 2050;
The company is securing more renewable energy to power operations by joining the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance, a community of large energy buyers accelerating a zero-carbon energy future;
Reducing solid waste sent to landfills by 1 pct and water consumption by 7 pct since 2017, against a goal to drive a 20 pct reduction in both metrics by 2025;
Launching the 777 ecoDemonstrator flying test bed to assess renewable sustainable fuels and technologies;
The company is collaborating with external partners and local nonprofits to support environmental sustainability;
Boeing's fuel efficient product offerings are enabling the industry to achieve a global approach to carbon-neutral growth starting in 2020 and a 50 pct reduction in carbon emissions by 2050.

EgyptAir Operates Record Sustainable Jet Fueled Flight (Int'l.)

In Cairo, Egypt's national air carrier, EgyptAir is reporting receipt of its newest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The Dreamliner flew 10,973 kilometres from Seattle to Cairo fueled solely by sustainable aviation fuel to become the world's longest sustainable flight.
EgyptAir is the first operator to use Boeing's new sustainable fuel delivery program that gives airlines the option to pick biofuel for aircraft delivery flights. Sustainable aviation fuels have been shown to help reduce aircraft CO2 emissions by up to 80 per cent.
The biodiesel biofuel used to power the Dreamliner was created from agricultural waste by Boston-headquartered World Energy at its Paramount, California facility which was designed to produce renewable jet fuel on a commercial scale. Boeing Environmental Plan Advances Biofuels (Ind. Report)
Aviation industry giant Boeing reports the release of its 2019 Global Environment Report
highlighting how the company is building cleaner, more fuel-efficient airplanes and finding innovative ways to recycle and conserve resources.
In 2018, Boeing unveiled its new environment strategy through 2025 with ambitious goals to innovate products for environmental performance, reduce emissions, waste, and water and energy consumption at work sites, and to work with communities around the globe.
Report highlights include:
Working with Etihad Airways to fly a 787 Dreamliner powered partly by biofuel made from desert plants irrigated with seawater;
Catalyzing development of sustainable aviation fuel and offering customers the option of using biofuel on delivery flights;
Surpassing 2018 targets, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 7.3 pct at work sites, and others.
