According to NFU Combinable Crops board chairman Tom Bradshaw, "Increasing the bioethanol content in fuel is a win-win for the environment, farmers and the economy.
The industry is desperate to see both Vivergo and Ensus plants back up and running so they can continue to convert British wheat into bioethanol.
But at the moment there simply isn't enough demand to keep these plants going."
Bradshaw added, "Now is the time for legislative action. Farmers want to help deliver renewable fuel for the nation but the government needs to step up and provide supportive policy, especially if we are to hit their target of becoming a net zero economy by 2050." "Production of biofuels can also be done efficiently under searing temperatures and without relying on Qatar's arable land," said SDC director and Qatar Biofuel Project manager Hareb al-Jabri. In a statement, he said the first phase of the project witnessed SDC’s research team producing biodiesel, bioethanol and bio-crude oil. These fuels should provide an additive source of energy, specifically for use by the airline industry.
According to Al-Jabri, the project adds value to the country's oil and gas sector as it aims to support the vision of Qatar Airways to use environmentally-friendly fuel in the airline industry, reducing the negative environmental effects of conventional fuel.
He added that the project will also contribute to carbon dioxide sequestration by recycling it to produce biofuels.

Currently, 419 million litres of renewable fuel have been supplied in period 2017/18, which is 3 pct of total road and non-road mobile machinery fuel. 179 million litres -- 43 pct -- of this fuel has so far been demonstrated to meet the sustainability requirements. Of this 179 million litres, Bioethanol comprises 43 pct of the supply, biodiesel 52 pct and biomethanol 5 pct. There was also a small volume of off-road biodiesel and biomethane.
Data on volumes of fuel, Renewable Transport Fuel Certificates (RTFCs) and Carbon & Sustainability (C&S) are held by the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) Administrator. Fuel volume data is submitted on a monthly basis by fuel suppliers to the RTFO Administrator and validated against HMRC duty payment data.

To attain its goal, COP 23 climate-neutral program will focus on energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy, offsetting unavoidable emissions, and other measures.
In a further effort to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transport, the UNFCCC is partnering with Ethanol Europe Renewables Ltd (EERL), aiming to promote the use of biofuels as lower-carbon alternatives to fossil fuels. EERL's Climate Ethanol Alliance of bioethanol producers aims to speed up the low-carbon transition of the transport sector through the promotion of climate action. A new study commissioned by environmental NGOs found that the production of first generation biofuels has driven up food and animal feed prices by 4 pct in Europe, contrary to the EC's own data which found the impact of ethanol "negligible." The EU's 2009 Renewable Energy Directive caps the share of crop-based (first generation) biofuels, including both bioethanol and biodiesel, in transport fuel at 7 pct.
