India's Praj Ind., ARAI Green Fuel Alliance Announced (Int'l. Report)

Alt Fuels Included in Rebuilding Resilient B.C. Plan (Ind. Report)

In Vancouver, the Canadian non-profit think-tank Pembina Institute is urging the Province of B.C. to use its recovery and stimulus plans to help create a low-carbon economy that generates jobs and protects the environment.

To that end, the Institute's Rebuilding a Resilient B.C. action plan recommends: B.C. positions itself to be a leading supplier of renewable fuels and invest in active (alternative , low-carbon) transportation as well as provide funding for capital and operating costs for transit. It also calls for the province to set a path to become leading producer and consumer of low-carbon and zero-carbon hydrogen. PA. DEP Offers Alternative Fuels Project Funding (Funding Report)

In Harrisburg, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently awarded more than $2.1 million in 2019 Alternative Fuel Incentive Grants (AFIG) to 18 cleaner fuel vehicle projects.

The program supports liquefied propane gas, biodiesel, CNG, ethanol and other cleaner fuels as replacement for older gasoline -- or diesel-fueled vehicles with cleaner-fuel vehicles to reduce emissions of harmful pollutants. The program also provides fueling stations for these vehicles.

Businesses, organizations, local governments, and schools are eligible for grants which are administered under the Pennsylvania Alternative Fuels Incentive Act of 2004. Carbon Recycling-to-Fuel Working Group Launched (Int'l. Report)

Nine Japanese companies are reported to have launched the Ship Carbon Recycling Working Group (WG) formed within Japan's Carbon Capture and Reuse (CCR) study group. The WG aims to explore the utilization of "methanation" technology for zero-emission maritime fuels in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero in maritime transportation, which accounts for 99.6 pct of Japanese imports and exports.

The first stage of activities involves: separation, capture and liquefaction of CO2 emitted from steelworks; transportation of liquefied CO2 by ship to a hydrogen supply site; generation of synthetic methane from CO2 and hydrogen by methanation reaction; and liquefaction of the synthetic methane and using it as marine fuel.

Decarbonizing Shipping: All Hands on Deck Launched (Ind. Report)

The Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell, Deloitte Netherlands and Deloitte UK have released their Decarbonizing Shipping: All Hands on Deck report -- a roadmap to decarbonize maritime shipping.

The report investigates alternative fuels such as biofuels, liquefied natural gas, and hydrogen, to help meet the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) regulations and calls for the maritime shipping industry to at least halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 while reducing CO2 emissions intensity by at least 40 pct by 2030, rising to 70 pct by 2050, relative to a 2008 baseline.

To that end, the research report found that industry stakeholders should prioritize five solutions over the next few years -- scale-up customer demand; global regulatory alignment; cross-sector R&D; scale-up controlled pilot projects; coordinated industry commitment. The report also notes reducing emissions from the current fleet can be partially achieved by implementing operational measures such as lubricant quality, digitalization, and the use of data and smart navigation strategies.

Report Investigates Marine Alternative Fuel Options (Ind. Report)

$5bn Green Hydrogen Facility Slated for Saudi Arabia (Int'l. Report)

US-based Air Products is reporting a $5 billion agreement with the world's largest oil exporter Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power and Neom to construct the world's largest green hydrogen-based ammonia production facility in the kingdom's planned $500 billion futuristic city straddling the Saudi borders with Egypt, Palestine and Jordan.

Air Products will hold the majority stake in the jointly owned and operated project that will produce green hydrogen through renewables-powered electrolysis, which will be used in the production of ammonia for export to global markets. Hydrogen has applications as a cleaner, alternative transportation fuel and other applications. Saudi Arabia is targeting the addition of 60 gigawatts of clean energy to the grid by 2030. Ways2H Announces Calif. Waste-to-Hydrogen Project (Ind. Report)

CNOOC Reports First Carbon-Neutral LNG Shipment (Int'l. Report)

CNOOC Gas & Power, China's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) importer, is reporting the purchase of the first of two carbon-neutral LNG shipments under a purchase and supply agreement with Shell. The purchase was offset by carbon credits through nature-based projects in China, Kallanish Energy reports.

Appleton, Wisconsin based U.S. Gain is reporting completion of a private natural gas fueling station at Testa Produce Inc's headquarters in Chicago. The new modular station will supply alternative fuel for the company's fleet of 40 natural gas delivery vehicles.

The use of natural gas as an alternative fuel significantly reduces transportation-related emissions, improves air quality, and delivers economic savings, according to the release.

Repsol Planning Green Hydrogen SynFuels Plant (Int'l.)

Madrid-based Spanish integrated energy company Repsol SA reports it is collaborating with Saudi Aramco and will construct a 10-MW, green-hydrogen plant to produce synthetic fuels at its Port of Bilbao refinery. The €60 million ($67.5 million) project is part of a larger €80-million decarbonization project that will include a carbon-capture project and a fuel-from- municipal waste plant. The project is expected to be completed and operational in 2024.

Repsol's TechLab and Aramco have signed a memorandum of understanding to carry out the technological development of the project, which will combine green hydrogen generated from renewable sources with CO2 emissions from the refinery as raw materials. This will produce 3.6 million lpy of transportation fuel. BMW i Ventures Investing $12.5Mn in Prometheus Fuels (Ind. Report)

BMW i Ventures reports it will invest $12.5 million in Santa Cruz, California-based Prometheus Fuels.

Prometheus Fuels is developing tools to filter atmospheric CO2 using water, electricity, and nanotube membranes to produce commercially-viable carbon-neutral fuels. Replacing all fuels made from oil and gas with zero-net-carbon fuels can reduce approximately 25 pct of global carbon emissions. "By using our zero net carbon fuel, which recycles the CO2 that's already in the air, we can extend the runway we have to solve the climate crisis," according to Rob McGinnis, founder and CEO of Prometheus. Rolls-Royce Focused on Net Zero Carbon by 2050 (Int'l Report)

In the UK, London-headquartered Rolls-Royce reports it has joined the UN Race to Zero campaign in the run up to COP26 slated for Glasgow in Nov., 2021, and reiterates its commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. To that end, Rolls Royce reports it will:
  • Align its business to the Paris Agreement goals, to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C;

  • Use its technological capabilities to play a leading role in enabling vital parts of the economy to get to net zero carbon by 2050, including aviation, shipping, rail, and power generation;

  • Continue and accelerate accelerate its R&D and investment in efficient products and novel solutions to the climate change challenge;

  • Drive changes in the efficiency of engines and work together with the fuels industry to significantly ramp up the availability of lower carbon alternative fuels.

  • Accelerate the development of new technologies and capabilities for future low emission products, including pioneering the electrification of flight;

  • Achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions from operations and facilities by 2030, by using 100 pct renewable energy, closed loop manufacturing techniques on high value metals, and deploy our cutting-edge microgrid capabilities.

    The global Race To Zero campaign mobilizes a coalition of leading net zero initiatives, representing 449 cities, 21 regions, 992 businesses, 38 of the biggest investors, and 505 universities. These "real economy" actors join 120 countries in the largest ever alliance committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 at the latest. Collectively these actors now cover nearly 25 pct of global CO2 emissions and over 50 pct GDP, according to the campaign website.   • Gasum Completes Norwegian LNG Marine Fuel Bunkering (Int'l.)

    The Finnish state-owned energy company Gasum is reporting a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering for the world's largest semi-submersible crane vessel, which is owned by Netherlands-based marine contracting firm Heerema.

    As a marine fuel, LNG meets all current and forthcoming IMO and EU regulations. In addition, the use of LNG removes all Sox emissions and particles and reduces Nox emissions by 85 pct compared to heavy fuel oil.     Danish Partnership to Produce Sustainable Fuels (Int'l. Report)

    Denmark's Moller-Maersk , Orsted, DSV Panalpina, DFDS, Copenhagen Airports, and SAS are reporting partnering for the production of green hydrogen and e-fuel sustainable fuels for land, maritime and air transportation in and around the Copenhagen area.

    A proposed facility is slated to be operational by 2023 and at full capacity of 250,000 metric tpy of fuel by 2030. A feasibility study has been launched and if viability is confirmed, the final investment decision to produce sustainable fuels in the first stage of the project should get underway in 2021.     £40Mn UK Clean Growth Fund Launched (Int'l. Report)

    In London, the UK government is reporting the launch of a £40 million venture capital fund for green energy, low-carbon technologies across the power, transport, waste, and building energy efficiency sectors.

    The fund seeks investments in early stage, seed or Series A rounds in 'exciting, innovative clean growth start-ups". Qualifying projects could include: energy storage and smart grid systems to bolster resilience in the power system; renewable heating and ventilation technologies across homes and commercial buildings; and bio-fuels and bio-energy systems.

    Investment parameters for the fund focus on clean growth technologies, hardware, products and services in sectors including power generation, waste, energy networks, buildings management, industries, bioenergy and alternative fuels. The fund will be managed by Clean Growth Investment Management (CGIM).     U.S. Gain Announces Dairy-Based RNG Offtake Deal (Ind. Report)

    Appleton, Wisconsin-based renewable natural gas (RNG) major is reporting an offtake agreement with DTE Biomass Energy for RNG produced by two anaerobic digestors at Statz Brothers Farms located in Marshall, WI.

    Statz Brothers Farms have been generating renewable electricity since 2009 and as their power purchase agreement neared expiration, the farm was seeking new opportunities to utilize the onsite digesters. "In the past, renewable electricity produced at dairy farms was in high demand by power companies that were willing to pay a premium for it. Today, that's not the case as other renewable electricity sources have emerged. Luckily, demand for RNG as an alternative vehicle fuel has been on the rise for the past several years, presenting farmers an opportunity to continue profitable use of digesters. As a leading RNG developer, we're working with farms and energy developers to produce fuel for the transportation market. In some cases, we'll invest capital to develop the project, but in others we'll offtake gas produced and link to the most lucrative markets for credit generation," said U.S. Gain RNG Director of Business Development, Hardy Sawall.

    "And now for something entirely different!" -- Pyongyang Recommends Charcoal Fueled Vehicles to Cut Emissions (Int'l.)

    In Pyongyang, in an effort to address the growing problem of vehicle emissions and air pollution, the President Donald Trump's new friend's Ministry of Land and Environment Protection has reportedly begun a wide-ranging crack down on "problematic diesel-fueled vehicles vehicles" and have implemented a ban on their importation and future operation with the exception of Cargo trucks weighing more than five tons which are considered "essential for the economy."

    The authorities also called on drivers to use alternative fuels, including the "active use of charcoal-powered vehicles." (Source: Daily NK, 7 May, 2020)

    Appleton, Wisconsin-based U.S. Gain, a leader in renewable natural gas (RNG) development and distribution, is reporting an offtake agreement with DTE Biomass Energy for RNG produced at Statz Brothers Farms located in Marshall, WI. Purchased RNG will be taken to the California transportation market where "there's a significant demand for dairy-based RNG."

    The Methanol Institute is reporting new data on the potential global availability of methanol will be hosted on the DNV GL Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform for evaluating the potential uptake of marine alternative fuels and energy efficiency technologies.

    Of the world's top 100 ports where methanol is known to be stored and shipped, 47 have confirmed methanol storage of more than 50,000 mt.

    DNV GL, the world's leading classification society and a recognized advisor for the maritime industry, developed the AFI platform to support the shipping industry's transition to a cleaner, green future with freely-available tools and resources.

    OSU Touts Biobutanol Transport Fuel R&D (New Prod & Tech, R&D)

    In Corvallis, an international research collaboration led by Oregon State University (OSU) has taken an important step toward the commercially viable manufacture of biobutanol transportation fuel. The researchers claims a key breakthrough is the development of a new metal organic framework (MOF) that can efficiently separate biobutanol from the broth of fermented biomass needed for the fuel's production. The researchers are now looking to partner with industry to try to scale up the separation method using the new MOF.

    Butanol, aka butyl alcohol, is more closely related to gasoline than ethanol and can be synthesized from petroleum or made from biomass. Bioethanol -- ethyl alcohol -- is a common biofuel additive but contains significantly less energy per gallon than gasoline and can also be harmful to engine components, according to the rlease.

    The process of creating biobutanol is known as ABE fermentation -- acetone-butanol-ethanol. It yields a watery broth that maxes out at about 2 pct butanol by weight. Hence the need for a separation tool that can work well in an aqueous environment and also in the presence of organic solvents, in this case acetone, which is a key ingredient in products like nail polish remover and paint thinner, the release notes. The novel MOF based on copper ions and carborane-carboxylate ligands (mCB-MOF-1) can pull butanol from the fermentation broth, via adsorption, with greater efficiency than distillation or other existing method, according to the release.

    A Bioenergy & Alternative Fuels report subscriber noted the following:

    First, the 40 million acres, more or less, of managed southern pine plantations are loblolly pine not longleaf pine. These two pine varieties have important differences in growth rate and ecological values.

    Second, and more much importantly, mature pine forest do not 'accelerate' their storage as they mature. These are privately owned lands and the details of the site and management practices are very important, but the annually growth rate (carbon accumulation) on most pine sites slows after 15-20 years. The TOTAL carbon on the acre/hectare increase, but at a slower annual rate.

    Finally, and completely absent from these discussion that are typically led by scientist or environmental groups who do not have a clear understanding of the on the ground ownership and motivations of private landowners in the southern US, is that without a source of income some of these forest will be converted to some other uses, probably pasture, which has very limited carbon storage potential. In effect these EU experts are trying to shift the costs of carbon sequestration to private landowners. One can argue that if they want to sequester carbon in trees, and take on the additional risk of unplanned, large scale release from fire, disease or hurricane, that is fine, but they should pay the landowner for the carbon and the lost income.

    South Australia Backs Renewable Hydrogen Fuel Ind. (Int'l Report)

    In the Land Down Under, new research from The Australia Institute has found that South Australians support the creation of a hydrogen energy industry in the state if it uses renewable sources of energy. The report found:
  • 79 pct of South Australians would prefer that South Australian hydrogen fuel is generated from renewable sources. -- 6 pct would prefer that it is generated from fossil fuel sources.

  • 73 pct of South Australians say South Australia should only pursue a hydrogen fuel industry if it uses renewable energy -- 13 pct disagree.

  • Alternative Fuel Vehicles Outselling Diesel in UK (Int'l Report)

    In the UK, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is reporting sales of alternative fuel vehicles have overtaken diesel in the UK new car market for the first time as the Coronavirus crisis.

    In March, diesel's market share dropped from 25.7 pct to 17.6 pct compared with March 2019, while for the first three months of the year, diesel's share fell from 26.8 pct to 18.9 pct compared to Q1 last year.

    Alternative fuels, covering all plug-in cars and hybrids, saw their market share nearly triple during Q1, reaching 20.6 pct of car sales, compared to 7.9 pct last year. During March, the market share of alternative fuels was 22 pct, compared to 7.8 pct for March 2019.

    The US DOE Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), working with Vertimass LLC, a licensee of the technology, reports development of Consolidated Dehydration and Oligomerization (CADO), a new technology to turn ethanol into competitively priced sustainable fuels.

    The single step CADO process is capable of converting vapor of wet ethanol into hydrocarbon blendstocks competitively priced at $2/gigajoule that can be blended with gasoline, diesel, or jet fuels to diminish emissions of greenhouse gases.

    The conversion procedure of fuel uses zeolite, a kind of catalyst, to create actual loner chains of hydrocarbons from ethanol (alcohol). The process substitutes the traditional multi-step processes and uses less energy.     GreenTherm RNG Program Launched in Idaho, Utah (Ind. Report)

    Reporting from Salt Lake City, Dominion Energy is touting its new GreenTherm renewable natural gas (RNG) program that allows customers in Idaho and Utah to purchase "blocks"of RNG at $5 each, added as a surcharge to their monthly gas bills.

    Dominion Energy uses these funds to purchase "green attributes" associated with the production of RNG. A "green attribute" verifies the gas was produced and injected into the system from a renewable source. One block is equal to half a standard dekatherm of RNG. A typical Utah residential customer consumes 80 dekatherms of natural gas annually.

    India Switching to World's Cleanest Fuel (Int'l. Report)

    In New Delhi, the Indian Oil Corp Ltd. (IOC) is reporting that virtually all India refineries are now producing ultra-low sulphur BS-VI (equivalent to Euro-VI grade) petrol and diesel as of the end of 2019. The new fuel is expected to be generally available nationwide by 1 April, this year.

    India adopted Euro-III equivalent (Bharat Stage-III) fuel with a sulphur content of 350 ppm in 2010 and then took seven years to move to BS-IV that had a sulphur content of 50 ppm then to BS-VI with 10 ppm with emission standards roughly equal to CNG, according to the release. State-owned oil refineries invested roughly Rs 35,000 crore $4,5 million +-) to upgrade plants to produce ultra-low sulphur fuel.     Brazil, India Announce Ethanol Cooperation MoU (Int'l. Report)

I also aims to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help redirect the sugar surplus in India, which currently requires government subsidies to guarantee competitive prices in the international market.

    USDA Offers $100Mn Biofuels Infrastructure Grant Program, Increases Biofuels Fleet (Ind. Report, Reg. & Leg.)

    In Washington,the USDA is reporting Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has directed the agency to acquire alternative fueled -- biodiesel, E85 -- vehicles (AFV) when replacing conventionally fueled vehicles. USDA owns and operates 37,000 vehicles and replaces approximately 3,000 every year.More specifically, the USDA will:
  • Acquire E85 or biodiesel-capable vehicles that meet USDA mission requirements;

  • Use station locator websites and applications to fuel with E15, E85, and biodiesel where available;

  • Prioritize the purchase of E15 for gasoline vehicles without E85 capability and the purchase of renewable diesel blends for diesel vehicles without B20 capability

  • For USDA locations that have in-house refueling pumps, coordinate with fuel vendors to acquire and provide biofuel blends, including E15, E85, B20 and higher biodiesel blends, and renewable diesel blends.

    These actions have the potential to increase USDA's annual consumption of E15 by up to 9 million gallons, E85 by 10 million gallons, and biodiesel and renewable diesel blends by up to 3 million gallons.

  • Manchester Plans to Halve GHG Emission by 2025 (Int'l. Report)

    In the UK, the city of Manchester (pop. 2.8 million), in keeping with its pledge to reach net-zero carbon by 2038, has issued a call to "collective action" on the climate crisis with proposals to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

    To that end, the city council wants to retrofit as many of the 350 city-owned buildings with more efficient technology, install solar and wind energy generation capacity on city owned housing sites and complexes, and complete the ongoing replacements of the city's street lighting with low energy LED lighting. The city will also invest roughly £10 million to replace diesel power fleet vehicles with alternative fuel and electric vehicles. City staff will also be incentivized to use cleaner transportation and to conserve energy.

    The council also intends to plant 2,000 trees, hedge trees and four community orchards per year beginning this year. The city's existing tree coverage stores 124,330 tonnes of carbon, absorbs 4,980 tonnes and removes 84 tonnes of pollution, according to the city release.

    Under the plan, the city council will work with and continue to fund the Manchester Climate Change Agency to establish community-wide climate change related engagement activities and to encourage businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and sign up to the zero-carbon ambition.     Penna. DEP Defends Gov. Wolf's RGGI Exec. Order (Ind. Report)

    Following up on our 4 Oct., 2019 coverage, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Patrick McDonnell has defended Gov. Tom Wolf's (D) executive order directing the agency to develop rules for joining RGGI, a cap and trade regional program that charges power producers for the pollution they emit.

    McDonnell's comments came in response to concerns from the House Appropriations Committee over how the state's share of the RGGI programs quarterly auction program would be used by the state, relative to climate change issues rather than unrelated programs and projects.

    Sec. McDonnell assured the Appropriations Committee "improvements to public transportation, installing energy efficient windows, insulation, or appliances, or building out alternative fuel vehicle infrastructure" were among the projects the RGGI funds would be applied to.

    Governor Wolf's executive order follows the implementation of aggressive clean energy targets announced last year, including a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 26 percent by 2025. Pennsylvania also became the 24th state to join the U.S. Climate Alliance -- a group formed in 2017 after President Donald Trump withdrew the nation from the Paris Agreement.

    Critics of RGGI argue it will cripple Pennsylvania's economy, force fossil fuel plants into early retirement and drive up electricity prices. Critics note that Pennsylvania is the nation's number two natural gas producer and the region's top power exporter -- making it very different, economically, from the other RGGI participants.     Heathrow Claims 93 pct Emissions Cut (Int'l. Report)

    In the UK, carbon neutral Heathrow Airport reports it has cut emissions 93 pct since 1990 after investing £100 million in energy efficiency measures and onsite power generation facilities. Heathrow noted it uses strictly "Clean" energy as needed, purchased carbon credits for 2019-21, and aims to achieve zero emissions from its operations within the next fifteen years.

    As we previously reported, Heathrow's four-part action plan to reduce and offset the growth in emissions builds on the momentum of technological change within the aviation industry to make travel more sustainable. The plan outlines action on four key areas including: cleaner aircraft performance and technology; improvements to airspace and ground operations; increased use of sustainable aviation fuels; and developing and promoting new carbon offsetting technologies and options. Additionally, Heathrow is calling on the ICAO -- the UN body for international aviation -- to develop global goals for the uptake of sustainable alternative fuels, and calling for the UK Government to engage ICAO and fellow member states to agree on a 2050 carbon emissions reduction goal for international aviation

    Other UK airports and airlines have committed to bring UK aviation to net-zero status by 2050 -- Gatwick Airport claimed carbon neutrality through renewable energy and offsets in 2018 and Birmingham Airport has committed to net-zero by 2033.     LNG Marine Fuel Misses the Boat on GHG Emission (Ind. Report)

    A new report just released by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) concludes that using LNG for maritime bunkers (martine fuel) may have little positive impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

    The ICCT analysis compares LNG, marine gas oil, very low sulphur fuel oil and heavy fuel oil used in marine engines in the LNG tanker and cruise sectors. However, results varied widely depending on engine technology. High-pressure dual fuel (HPDF) machinery came out top but the ICCT estimates that only 90 of the 750-plus LNG-fuelled ships in service use these engines. Moreover, using a 20-year global warming potential model and taking into account upstream emissions, combustion emissions and methane slip, there is no climate benefit from using LNG, regardless of engine technology, the analysis concludes.

    The ICCT's findings come as a serious blow to those who have advocated LNG as an interim fuel on the path to low- and zero-carbon propulsion technologies.

    CEMEX Commits to Cutting Cement Production CO2 Emissions (Int'l.)

    Global building materials and cement company CEMEX reports it supports the urgency of collective action to ensure compliance by all parties in the implementation of the Paris Agreement commitments and the fulfilment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals on Climate Action.

    To that CEMEX has been working to cut cement production related carbon emissions through investing in energy efficiency, using alternative fuels, increasing its use of renewable energy and increasing clinker substitution through alternative cementitious materials. Through these efforts the company has achieved a reduction of more than 22 pct in net specific CO2 emissions compared to a 1990 baseline.

    In 2019 CEMEX announced a goal to reduce 30 pct of its CO2 net emissions by 2030, but has raised its 30 pct taget to 35 pct our CO2net emissions by 2030, aligned with the Science-Based Targets Methodology.

    UPS Announces Kinetrex, TruStar RNG Contracts (Ind. Report)

    Atlanta-based logistics giant UPS reports it has entered into multi-year renewable natural gas (RNG) agreements with Indianapolis-headquartered LNG specialist Kinetrex Energy and White Plains, New York-based compressed natural gas (CNG) and renewable natural gas fuel specialist TruStar Energy which together will supply as much as 80 million gallon equivalents (GEs) of RNG to UPS over the terms of the agreements.

    Kinetrex will supply UPS with up to 52.5 million GEs of RNG over the life of the contract to be used in its tractor trailer vehicles throughout the Midwest. TruStar Energy will supply UPS with up to 27.5 million GEs of RNG over the life of the contract to be used in California. The RNG will be used to fuel UPS's CNG-powered trucks in both Visalia and Moreno Valley, Calif.

    CARB Announces Low Carbon Fuel Standard Verification (Ind Report)

    In Sacramento, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has released a list of CARB-certified, third-party verifiers to provide program quality control of alternative fuels and the state's Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS).

    All verifiers must meet specific requirements that include prescreening for education and professional experience and completion of required training. Individual accredited verifiers work in teams under the direction of companies accredited by CARB as LCFS verification bodies.

    The LCFS program is designed to lower the carbon intensity in fuels by assessing each step in their production, from extraction to combustion. Fuels are compared to an annually declining baseline. If a fuel has a carbon intensity above that baseline it generates a deficit for the producer. If the intensity is below the baseline it can generate credits which may then be sold to a producer who has a deficit.     GTI Launching Hydrogen Fuel Tech Center (R&D, Ind. Report)

    In Des Plaines, Illinois, the not-for-profit Gas Technology Institute (GTI), a research, development and training organization focused on natural gas and energy markets, is reporting the launch of a hydrogen fuel technology center.

    GTI focuses its R&D efforts on the generation of clean hydrogen using hydrocarbon fuels that incorporate carbon capture and/or carbon sequestration CCS) in a cost-effective manner. These technology efforts are directed at both large-scale hydrogen production using natural gas feedstock, and smaller distributed hydrogen production for transportation or remote power generation using either gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon fuels, according to the release.
