ALLETE Clean Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of ALLETE Inc., is reporting PPAs with Oshkosh Corp. and Hormel Foods for a combined 100 MW from its 303 MW Caddo County, Oklahoma wind site which is under construction and slated for operation before the year end.

The approximately 110-turbine facility will increase ALLETE Clean Energy's total operating, under construction and build-transfer wind energy projects to more than 1,450 MW of nameplate capacity, according to the ALLETE release. Minnesota Power

Duluth-based utility Minnesota Power -- an Allete company -- reports it will retire the 335-MW coal-fired Unit 3 at its Boswell Energy Center in Cohasset by 2030 and convert the power plant's 468-MW Unit 4 to be coal-free by 2035.

The utility will also add 400 MW of wind and solar power to its energy mix by 2035 . The company reached 50 pct renewables in December, 2020, and now plans to increase that to 70 pct by 2030, 80 pct carbon-free by 2035 and 100 pct carbon-free by 2050. GE Renewable Energy

GE Renewable Energy has announced receipt of a 265-MW onshore wind turbine and 15-year full-service agreement order for ALLETE Clean Energy's 300-MW Caddo Wind farm in Caddo County, Oklahoma. The wind farm will utilize GE's 2.8-127 turbines. Construction on the project has begun, with commissioning expected in 2021.

The Caddo project is fully contracted for the first 12 years with three investment-grade Fortune 500 customers, according to ALLETE. Minnkota Power

Further to our 14th Jan., 2019 coverage, Grand Forks, Minnesota-based Minnkota Power Cooperative reports its planned Project Tundra CCS project is expected to capture 90 pct of carbon emissions from a single unit of the 455-MW lignite coal-fired 1970s-era Milton R. Young Station power plant in the city of Center. The project calls for carbon to be pumped into an underground geologic storage area on land underneath the lignite mine that supplies coal to the plant.

The planned project has received $30 million in federal and $15 million funding from the North Dakota Lignite Research Fund. The University of North Dakota is collaborating with Minnkota on developing the system with ALLETE Clean Energy and ALLETE subsidiary BNI Energy assisting with the development. Minnesota-based Allete Inc. subsidiary Allete Clean Energy is reporting its 106-MW Glen Ullin Energy Center west of Bismarck, North Dakota is now online and producing wind power for Xcel Energy customers in the Upper Midwest. The 43-turbine wind facility produces sufficient electric power for about 55,600 homes.

ALLETE Clean Energy also developed the 107.5-mw Thunder Spirit wind farm near Hettinger and sold it to Montana-Dakota Utilities in 2015. ALLETE Clean Energy expanded Thunder Spirit to about 155 MW and sold the expansion to MDU in 2018. The company is also working on the 80-mw South Peak wind site in Montana with plans to bring it online near the end of the year to sell power to NorthWestern Energy. The company's approximately 300-megawatt Diamond Spring wind project in Oklahoma has broken ground and will sell wind power to Walmart, Starbucks and Smithfield Foods. ALLETE Clean Energy, a subsidiary of ALLETE, reports acquisition of the 303MW Diamond Spring wind project in Oklahoma from Charlottesville, Virginia-headquartered Apex Clean Energy.

With the acquisition, ALLETE Clean Energy will now build, own, operate and sell the wind power generated from the wind farm to two Fortune 500 companies under 15-year power sales agreements.

The purchase includes the two power sales agreements signed by Apex totaling up to 228MW and additional capacity to serve corporate and industrial markets.

ALLETE plans to break ground on the wind farm this year and expects to bring the facility which will generate sufficient energy for 114,000 households online in 2020. Minnesota-based Allete Inc. subsidiary Allete Clean Energy reports it is refurbishing its 50-MW Condon Wind power facility in Oregon as part of a fleet-wide optimization strategy.

The refurbishing, which will include new equipment and system upgrades, is expected to extend the operating life of the wind park and better position it for extending its existing contract with the Bonneville Power Administration when it expires in late 2022. Further to our 5 March coverage, Duluth, Minnesota-based Allete Clean Energy is reporting the sale of the Thunder Spirit wind facility in North Dakota to Montana-Dakota Utilities. The wind farm incorporates 16, 3-MW turbines generating sufficient energy for approximately 15,000 homes.

Allete also reports ground-breaking on a 106-MW, North Dakota wind project that will supply electricity to Xcel Energy under a 20-year PPA.

ALLETE Clean Energy

Duluth, Minnesota-based ALLETE Clean Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ALLETE Inc. reports it will sell the 48-MW phase two of the Thunder Spirit wind farm near Hettinger, North Dakota to Montana-Dakota Utilities (MDU) for approximately $85 million. The deal, which has been approved by the ND PSC, is expected to close before the year end.

The 107-MW first phase of Thunder Spirit incorporates 43 turbines and generates sufficient power for approximately 30,000 homes.

ALLETE Clean Energy owns and operates approximately 535 MW of wind energy generation at facilities in Minnesota, Iowa, Oregon and Pennsylvania.
