Wartsila Joins Maritime Carbon Capture Consortium (Int'l.)

Helsinki-headquartered Wartsila reports it will take a central role in developing maritime carbon capture & storage (CCS) technologies as one of the leading partners in the LINCCS (linking carbon capture and storage) consortium.

Wartsila Exhaust Treatment is the market leading modular marine exhaust gas cleaning system manufacturer, with a range of lifecycle scrubbing solutions. The treatment offers integrated compliant solutions for all types of ships, and in open loop, closed loop or hybrid configurations.

To support CCS technology development, Wartsila Exhaust Treatment will expand its engineering facility in Moss, Norway to develop, test and verify the CCS solutions. This will bring the technology to a maturity level where it can be piloted in full scale on a vessel.

The LINCCS project is focused on reducing costs for new carbon storage facilities by 70 pct and advancing the development of carbon capture technologies in a range of sectors. This week, it was announced that the LINCCS consortium would receive 111m Norwegian kroner in funding over the next three years from the Norwegian government's Green Platform Initiative.

Wartsila will lead this workstream with support from the Sustainable Energy Catapult Center and SINTEF Energy to contribute to wider, cross-industry CCS developments from project partners including Aker Solutions, Cognite, Aize, AGR, OpenGoSim, Wintershall Dea, Var Energi, Lundin, Equinor and TotalEnergies. Aker, Doosan Babcock Seek UK Renewable Energy Projects (Int'l.)

Oslo, Norway headquartered engineering firm Aker Solutions reports it is partnering with UK-based Doosan Babcock to jointly deliver renewable energy and new hydrogen production plants and facilities for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) projects in the UK. Opportunities for other projects within the process and energy industries will also be explored.

According to the release, the two firms together provide a full engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) solution for the UK's zero-carbon energy transition agenda and have already identified some key prospects. Equinor Awards $74Mn in Northern Lights CCS Contracts (Int'l.)

In Oslo, Equinor is reporting the issuance of $74 million in contracts for its Northern Lights project, the world's first carbon capture project to pump Norwegian industrial emissions into an offshore reservoir.

Equinor awarded a $57.5 million EPCI contract to Subsea 7 for fabrication, pipe laying and subsea installations to be completed during 2022-2023. Equinor also awarded a $16.1 million EPCI contract to Stavenger-based oil and gas service provider Aibel for the Northern Lights subsea control system.

According to the company most contracts for Northern Lights are now in place, including Aker Solutions ‘ $28 million deal for the CO2 receiving facilities outside Bergen and subsea equipment for injecting captured CO2 into a reservoir for permanent storage. Aker's work is expected to be completed in 2023.

The Norwegian government-funded Northern Lights project will transport, inject and store up to 1.5 million tpy of CO2 and is slated to be operational in 2024. Aker Solutions Inks $57.6Mn Carbon Capture Deal (Int'l. Report)

Aker Solutions reports receipt of a roughly $57.6 million contract from its spin-off Aker Carbon Capture for engineering, procurement, and management assistance for a CO2 capture plant at Heidelberg Cement-owned Norcem's cement plant in Brevik, Norway.

The project, part of Norway's Longship project, will start in January 2021 for completion in 2024 and will capture roughly 400,000 metric tpy of CO2.

For the project, Aker Carbon Capture is responsible for the delivery of a complete new facility for capture, intermittent storage, and offloading of CO2, with integrated waste-heat recovery. Aker Solutions Plans Offshore Wind, CC Units Spinoff (Int'l. Report)

Norwegian offshore engineering and construction firms Aker Solutions ASA is reporting it will spin off and list its offshore wind and carbon capture (CC) divisions.

Aker Offshore Wind Holding AS and Aker Carbon Capture AS will secure funds for their future operations in private placements and list on the Oslo Stock Exchange's Merkur Market. In the offshore wind industry, Aker is involved in projects in California, South Korea and Norway, and has plans to bid in the upcoming ScotWind lease round. In addition, the company is closely monitoring markets like Japan, Vietnam, France and Italy.

Aker Solutions Offloading Carbon-Capture Business (Int'l Report)

Aker Solutions reports it is launching a series of structural and strategic changes to transform the company and enhance shareholder value by spinning off the wind and carbon capture businesses to shareholders and merging Aker Solutions ASA with Kvaerner ASA to create an optimized supplier company.

Aker Solutions intends to spin off its wind development business as well as the carbon capture technology business to Aker Solutions' shareholders in two separate companies. Oslo-based Kvaerner and Aker Solutions have entered into a merger plan, whereby the two entities will join forces to create Aker Solutions ASA, Combined 2019 revenues for the companies were about NOK 38 billion ($4.1 billion US) with an EBITDA of NOK 2.7 billion.

Aker Solutions intends to separate its CCUS business in a separate entity, Aker Carbon Capture followed by a private placement in the company, guaranteed by Aker ASA, to secure sufficient funding for the next phase of the development. The shares in the CCUS Company are expected to start trading on Merkur Market during August 2020. Norcem, Aker Solutions Ink CO2 Capture Agreement (Int'l. Report)

Aker Solutions and HeidelbergCement-owned Norcem are reporting an agreement to advance the engineering, procurement and construction of a CO2 capture, liquification and intermediate storage plant at Norcem's cement plant in Brevik, Norway.

The project will use Aker Solutions' Advanced Carbon Capture (ACC) technology and its HSE-friendly S26 amine solvent.

The Akers Solutions--Norcem project is subject to Norwegian government approval and funding of the project. If completed, the plant could become the world's first large-scale capture plant at a cement producer. Offshore Wind California Grows Membership (Ind. Report)

French offshore wind foundations specialist Naval Energies has joined Menlo Park-based Offshore Wind California, an international association of offshore wind developers and technology companies focused on the California market. The association supports a goal of 10 GW of installed offshore wind capacity in the Golden State a by 2040.

Aker Solutions Mobile CCS Test Facility Underway in Sweden (Int'l.)

Norwegian engineering firm Aker Solutions reports its mobile carbon capture and storage (CCS) test facility at oil major Preem's hydrogen gas plant refinery in Lysekil, Sweden, has begun test operations. Full-scale operations are slated for later this year when the project reduces the Lysekil refinery emissions by 500,000 metric tpy -- one-third of the refinery's total annual CO2 emission -- according to the company.

The project, a collaboration between Sweden's largest fuel company Preem, Aker Solutions, Chalmers University of Technology, Equinor, and the Norwegian research institute SINTEF, is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency and the Norwegian research and development programme CLIMIT. Norcem Advancing Norwegian Cement Plant CCS Project (Int'l Report)

Oslo-based HeidelbergCement subsidiary cement manufacturer Norcem is reporting as much as 400,000 tpy of carbon dioxide could be captured and stored at what is set to become the world's first full-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility for cement production, if government construction funding is approved. The project, which would use Aker Solutions carbon capture technology, would be constructed at a Norcem cement plant in Brevik.

The project has received necessary safety and quality certifications and could break ground in January 2021. Floating Wind Farm Planned for Ulsan, Korea (Int'l Report)

Following up on our 21st October coverage, EDP Renewables, a consortium founded by EDP and Aker Solutions reports it has joined WindPower Korea with investments in the development company Korea Floating Wind Power (KFWind). Principle Power, which had a role in originating the KFWind project portfolio, will supply its WindFloat foundation technology for the 500-MW project.

As previously reported, KFWind inked a MoU with the City of Ulsan to cooperate on the development of floating wind projects and support the Ulsan region as a manufacturing hub for domestic and export offshore wind markets.

South Korea is targeting 13 GW of offshore wind installed by 2030, and 30 pct or more renewable energy by 2040. Floating Wind Farm Planned for Ulsan, Korea (Int'l Report)

A consortium of WindPower Korea, EDP Renewables and the engineering firm Aker Solutions are reporting plans to develop an initial 500MW floating wind farm off the coast of Ulsan Metropolitan City in South Korea. Principle Power will supply its proven WindFloat® foundation technology for the project.

The South Korean Government is calling for 13 GW of offshore wind to be installed by 2030 and set a target of at least 30 pct renewable energy by 2040.

The Ulsan area is considered well-suited for commercializing floating wind, due to the combination of industry-leading shipyards, maritime expertise and port facilities in the region. Coalition Calls for 10 GW of Calif. Offshore Wind Power (Ind Report)

A new Offshore Wind California coalition of renewable energy companies is calling for the Golden State to commit to a goal of at least 10 GW of primarily floating offshore wind power in California waters by 2040.

The group that counts Equinor and offshore engineering company Aker Solutions among its members notes that U.S. East Coast states have about 22 GW worth of offshore wind commitments and are projected to see an estimated $70 billion in related supply chain spending by 2030.

The US DOE National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) estimates California's potential for offshore wind at about 112 GW, including about 8.4 GW in three Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) designated study areas. NREL also notes that floating wind platforms are a basic requirement for most of the state's offshore waters, which are too deep to support monopile or multi-leg jackets. OGTC Announces Net-Zero Solution Center (Int'l. Report)

In the UK, the Aberdeen-based Oil & Gas Technology Center (OGTC) , in partnership with industry, reports it will create a new Net-Zero Solution Center to accelerate the development and deployment of technologies to de-carbonize offshore operations and develop the UKCS as the first net-zero oil and gas basin globally, supporting the industry's Roadmap 2035.

The Center will focus on developing technologies to reduce operational carbon emissions, working with other parts of the energy sector to create integrated solutions and re-purposing infrastructure to accelerate carbon capture usage and storage, hydrogen production and gas-to-wire capacity.

Aker Solutions to Assess Possible Oil Refinery CCS Tech (Int'l)

Global engineering company Aker Solutions reports it has been selected by Sweden's largest fuel company PREEM to conduct a feasibility study of the technological and economic impact of implementing carbon capture technology at Preemraff Lyekil, Scandinavia's major crude oil refinery.

The scope of Aker's work includes pilot testing of carbon capture from the oil refinery flue gas in industrial conditions. The test is intended to assess the carbon capture process performance such as solvent degradation rate, energy efficiency and percentage of CO2 captured which will be included in the possible later design and implementation of a large-scale capture plant. The feasibility study will include design of a full-scale carbon capture plant for the Hydrogen Production Unit (HPU) at the refinery.
