DNV GL Unveils Online Battery Testing Tool (New Prod & Tech)

The certification body DNV GL is touting its new new BATTERY XT software tool that compiles life-cycle data and predicts battery degradation under different conditions and duty cycles, thus enabling operators to verify product warrantees and performance guarantees before they buy.

Once tested, batteries can be sized to any duty cycle and developers can scale without waiting on data from suppliers. The BATTERY XT is "the world's only independently created database of Li-on battery performance to help the market deploy faster," according to a company release. Windlab Lands Kennedy Energy Park PPA (Int'l, Ind. Report)

Following up on our October 17, 2016 coverage, Australian renewable energy developer Windlab reports it has secured a 10-year agreement with the Queensland government-owned CS Energy, which will buy both the renewable energy and some of the large-scale generation certificates (LGCs) produced from phase 1 of the Kennedy Energy Park, the country’s first grid-connected large-scale hybrid project combining wind, solar and battery storage.

The first phase of the Kennedy project -- a 50/50 JV with Eurus Energy Holdings and Windlab -- is a 60.5 MW hybrid renewable energy project comprises 43.5 MW of wind capacity, 15 MW of solar PV capacity and a 2 MW Lithium ion battery storage installation near Hughenden.

Windlab recently completed a capital raising and stock market listing to help it fund the first stage of the Kennedy project, and other projects in its pipeline. E.On Completes EFR Battery Energy Storage Project (Ind. Report)

E.On is confirming completion of an Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) project following the installation and connection of its 10MW battery at the Blackburn Meadows Biomass Plant last month in Yorkshire, the UK.

Green Charge Developing Bay State's Largest Energy Storage Installation (Ind. Report)

ENGIE subsidiary Green Charge Networks reports it will develop and operate a 3 MW battery energy storage system at the 5.76-MW Mt. Tom Solar array adjacent to the former Mt. Tom Power Station in Massachusetts.

The system, which could be the largest utility-scale energy storage system in the Bay State when completed in April 2018, will deliver energy to Holyoke Gas & Electric (HG&E). The system will be used to optimize intermittent solar energy and reduce utility capacity costs for HG&E while reducing stress on the grid. The Institute -- a consortium of Oxford University, Imperial College London, University College London, University of Warwick, University of Cambridge, University of Southampton and Newcastle University -- will be led by University of Oxford, which includes Imperial College London. Initial funding of £65 million will be provided by the Sec. of State Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and is part of government's £246 million investment in battery technology. Samsung Supplying Battary Cells for Massive Aussie Energy-Storage Facility (Int'l Report)

In Palo Alto, California, Tesla reports it has selected Samsung SDI, rather than its EV battery supplier Panasonic, to supply battery cells for massive Australian energy-storage facility which Tesla CEO Elon Musk vowed to build within 100 days, "on time or its free" after regional power outages. Tesla is importing the Samsung cells to the U.S. for final assembly before sending them to Australia.

US Residential Energy Storage Market Shifting, says GTM (Ind. Report)

According to market analysis from GTM Research, grid-tied residential energy storage batteries in the US will this year for the first time overtake off-grid and grid-independent storage systems. GTM estimates that in 2016 the US installed more than 4,400 residential batteries, totaling 127 MWh, of which 86 pct were off-grid or grid-independent backup. Their share is expected to grow to 99 pct by 2022 as annual additions of off-grid and grid-independent systems will remain relatively flat, GTM Research projects.

While currently residential storage is concentrated in several markets such as Hawaii, California and states in the Northeast, which have suitable application and regulatory conditions, GTM Research expects the segment to grow, spurred by falling systems costs, utility rate design, and other factors. Acciona Launches Spanish Wind Energy Storage Plant (Int'l)

Further to our 2nd june coverage, Spanish infrastructure group Acciona SA is reporting the opening of its first wind energy battery storage plant in Barasoain, Navarre province Spain. The energy storage system, which includes two batteries, a fast-response 1 MW/0.39 MWh battery that can maintain 1 MW of power for 20 minutes, and a slower-response battery of 0.7 MW/0.7 MWh that can maintain 0.7 MW for one hour, was installed at a grid-connected wind farm to show how batteries can help boost the penetration of renewable energy in the transmission system and optimize the management of the energy produced.

Primus Energy Flow Battery Trials in South Africa (Ind. Report)

The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) reports it is underwriting a demonstration by South African utility Eskom to trial Hayward, California-based Primus Power's flow batteries. South African utility-scale solar power developer Solafrica Energy won a USTDA "sole-source" grant for the project which is intended to determine where the South African grid network would benefit from the deployment of batteries. A plan would then be formulated for large-scale deployment of Primus Power's EnergyPod 2, zinc-bromide flow battery systems.

Duke Investing $30Mn in NC Energy Storage Systems (Ind. Report)

BYD Plans HV B-Box Energy Storage System U.S. Launch (Ind. Report)

DRAX Considering Battery Back-Up for Gas Power Plant (Int'l)

In the UK, power giant DRAX, which recently switched from coal-burning to biomass power generation at its North Yorkshire power station, reports it is planning to move on from biomass to powering its units with gas backed-up with huge battery storage units and to that end is seeking regulatory approval from the national Planning Inspectorate.

The company plans to convert two of its three remaining coal-fired units with gas and another to biomass. Under the new options being considered up to 3.6GW of new gas generation capacity and 200MW of battery storage could be installed, subject to investment agreements and the ability to secure a 15-year capacity market contract and other considerations. Li-Ion Battery Plant Planned for Thailand (Int'l. Report)

In the Land Down Under, electric power and gas retailer EnergyAustralia's $9.3 million investment in Brisbane-based energy management business Redback Technologies last October has now born fruit with the company launching the Redback Smart Hybrid System for homes today.

The energy management and storage system combines solar inverter, a battery enclosure and intelligent energy management software in a single outdoor hub which can be paired with solar panels and batteries. It also has an app so users can access, monitor and control their energy use from a smartphone or tablet.

Retailer EnergyAustralia estimates an average home would save around $1,500 annually when the system is combined with solar panels and a battery. A complete new system would cost around $9,000 to install or $7,000 to retrofit to existing solar panels, based on inverter modifications, and pay for itself within seven years.

The Redback Smart Hybrid Inverter has a 5 kW power output and the potential to store up to 13.2 kWh of electricity -- sufficient for 75 pct of the average home's daily energy needs. The modular design means a homeowner can start with 3.3kWh of storage and add more battery units over time. Battery Makers Plan Preemptive Energy Storage Investment (Int'l)

In Seoul, Korean battery manufacturers LG Chem, Samsung SDFI and SK Innovations report they will invest about 2.6 trillion won ($2.3 billion) in Korea by 2020. Of that total, 610 billion won ($539 million) will be committed to battery technology development such as the innovation and upgrading of the performance of secondary batteries for electric vehicles and 2 trillion won will be committed to expand battery energy storage production capacities in a move to "preemptively expand the market of electric vehicles and energy storage systems (ESSs)."

The three firms have also lobbied the government for increased support such as tackling a surge in the prices of raw materials for secondary batteries and strengthening the competitiveness of material and equipment makers. In the UK, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), in partnership with Northern Powergrid and Newcastle University is reporting the launch of "Integrel", a new £30 million green energy R&D facility in Gateshead. The facility, which bills itself as the UK's first test centre for integrated energy system technology, will carry out research into battery energy storage, the use of hydrogen as an energy source and new ways of reducing the carbon output of energy storage and transport.

The attached NREL report presents the first publicly available comprehensive survey of the magnitude of demand charges for commercial customers across the U.S. -- a key predictor of the financial performance of behind-the-meter battery storage systems. There are an estimated 5 million commercial customers nationwide who can subscribe to retail electricity tariffs that have demand charges in excess of $15 per kilowatt -- over a quarter of the total 18 million commercial customers the U.S. While the economic viability of installing battery energy storage must be determined on a case-by-case basis, high demand charges are often cited as a critical factor in battery project economics. Increasing use of demand charges in utility tariffs and anticipated future declines in storage costs may also serve to unlock additional markets and strengthen existing ones.

Romeo Power Raises $100Mn for Battery Facility Launch (Funding)

Vernon, California-headquartered battery and energy storage startup Romeo Power reports it has raised almost $100 million in financing from unnamed investors, including $65 million in contracts, with which to launch its 113,000 square-foot, fully automated manufacturing facility, scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce 1GWh of battery capacity on a single shift, reaching 4GWh capacity per shift during 2018.

The company will produce cylindrical lithium-ion cells for mobility and a product named Powerstack for stationary energy storage based on the same battery pack design. Romeo Power says that energy density in its batteries can be 25 pct higher than competing lithium-ion providers. The product's thermal performance is good enough to improve (reduce) charging times by anywhere from 15 pct to 30 pct and have inbuilt protection against thermal runaway and is well-protected against cross cell propagation, according to the company. Sono Plans $18,000 Solar-Powered Vehicle (New Prod & Tech)

Munich, Germany-based German tech startup company Sono Motors reports it plans to produce a 5-passenger, solar powered automobile that will sell in the European market for the equivalent of $18,000 US -- not including a $4,500 battery. The funding will be distributed through three competition streams including a £45 million research competition led by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and the creation of a Battery Institute -- a consortium of universities that will address the key industrial challenges in battery development.

Battery Storage, Energy Efficiency Companies Raise $1Bn January - June, 2017 (Ind. Report)

The global clean energy communications and consulting firm Mercom Capital Group reports that global battery storage, smart grid, and energy efficiency companies raised more than $1 billion in venture capital (VC) funding during the January-June period of this year. In the corresponding period of 2016, $ 807 million was raised.

In January-June 2017, smart grid companies raised $304 million while VC funding into energy efficiency technology companies totaled $242 million in 20 deals. On a quarter on quarter basis, VC funding for battery storage companies jumped to $422 million in 10 deals in April-June this year compared to $58 million in eight deals in January-March 2017. VC funding into energy efficiency technology companies fell significantly to $29 million in Q2 2017 compared to the $213 million in in Q1 2017, the report said. EWE Gasspeicher Plans Massive Redox Flow Tech Energy Storage Project (Int'l, Ind. Report)

Oldenburg, Germany-headquartered gas storage firm EWE Gasspeicher GmbH, a subsidiary of Germany utility EWE, reports it plans to construct a redox flow technology battery with sufficient capacity to power a city the size of Berlin for an hour. If built, the project will involve filling two salt caverns, each of around 100,000 cubic meters in volume, with brine to create a redox flow battery that has capacity of up to 120 MW and 700 megawatt-hours.

EWE Gasspeicher presently uses caverns for natural-gas storage and is looking to bring the novel redox flow "brine4power" (b4p)technology to market by 2023.

The project will be based on a process developed at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Thuringia, which employs electrolytes based on recyclable polymers dissolved in salt water. BDQM will add additional distributed energy resources -- fuel cells, solar power, battery storage and thermal storage -- that will enable ConEd to delay additional traditional infrastructure construction and thus create savings for customers. Tesla Solar Panel Now On Sale

Tesla’s company-branded solar panel is now officially on sale on selected stores. The official sale of the solar panel in stores follows after the announcement of the Silicon Valley-based Corporation which has instigated a push on Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Solar promotional supplies in its shops and verified a preliminary platform where it wholesaled some of its solar merchandises from the sites. The preliminary platform was a success and it is now expected that Tesla’s Solar Roof and other Tesla-Branded solar Panels will now be available on stores nationwide and globally.

As seen in reports, Tesla has expounded on the reports in their Q1 shareholders letter. “Recently, we tested sales of our solar and storage products in several Tesla stores, and saw sales productivity improve 50% to 100% relative to the best non-Tesla retail locations. Based on these results, we are working towards fully staffing more than 70 Tesla stores in the U.S. and abroad with dedicated Tesla energy sales people over the next two quarters.”

Back in November, Tesla acquired SolarCity for an amount of $2.6 billion – a very much discussed acquisition by the shareholders. However, some questioned the move. The acquisition was deemed the world’s first ever vertically integrated defensible energy corporation and so far, Tesla remains as the only company serving in that industry.
