United Airlines Invests $40Mn in SAF, Decarbonisation (Ind. Report)

Following up on our Sept. 19th coverage, US air carrier United Airlines is reporting a $40 million commitment to accelerate the development of sustainable aviation biofuels and other technologies to decarbonize the aviation industry.

As previously reported , United agreed to purchase up to 10 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over the next two years. United also invested over $30 million in Fulcrum Bioenergy, a producer of SAF. The airline's option to purchase almost one billion gallons of sustainable fuel from Fulcrum represents the largest offtake agreement for SAF in the airline industry. Gulfstream Announces First Carbon-Neutral Flights (Ind. Report)

General Dynamics subsidiary Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. reports the Gulfstream G650ER, Gulfstream G600, Gulfstream G500, Gulfstream G550 and Gulfstream G280 made the company's first carbon-neutral flights, traveling from Savannah, Ga., to Las Vegas using a combination of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and carbon offsets.

The flights used a 30/70 blend of low-carbon, drop-in SAF and traditional, petroleum-based Jet A fuel. The emissions associated with using 70 pct Jet A were more than offset by the company's purchase, for a per-flight-hour fee, of verified emission reduction (VERs) credits through a third-party offset provider. SkyNRG Touts Sustainable Aviation Fuel Programme (Ind. Report)

Amsterdam-based aviation biofuel specialist SkyNRG reports the launch of its Board Now programme that allow companies to reduce their business air travel emissions while contributing to the development of a new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility.

By signing up to Board Now, organizations will commit to the purchase of SAF for a period of five years. Investment made through the programme will be used by SkyNRG to cover the price difference between SAF and conventional jet fuel. The renewable fuel will be produced by Europe's first dedicated 100,000 tpy SAF production plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. Delta Invests $2Mn in Forest Biomass Biofuel Study (Ind. Report)

U.S. air carrier Delta Air Lines reports it is partnering with Northwest Advanced Bio-fuels (NWABF) for a $2 million study to determine the feasibility of building a facility in Washington State to produce sustainable aviation fuel and other biofuel products.

The facility would utilize forestry waste and wood "slash" to produce sustainable fuels. The result would qualify under an approved carbon-reducing pathway recognized by the American Society of Testing and Materials.

Delta expects the study to be completed by the middle of 2020, at which time it will "evaluate the next steps in moving forward with the project's development" with the expectation that the project would be in production by the end of 2023. Biofuels produced at the facility could provide around 10 pct of the airline's annual jet fuel consumption in the West Coast region.

As previously reported, Delta operated its first carbon-neutral delivery flight, using biofuels on a new A321. Avfuel Supplying Aviation SAF at Jackson Hole Demo (Ind. Report)

Ann Arbor, Michigan-based aviation fuels and services provider Avfuel Corporation reports it will supply 7,300 gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to operators flying in and out of Jackson Hole Aviation airfield on September 3 and 4. The initiative is part of a demonstration event to encourage further commercial-scale SAF production and use.

According to Avfuel, "We're committed to raising awareness on the viability of sustainable aviation fuel. Events like these show that the product exists, it is safe, it is simply jet fuel and it provides a great benefit to our environment. By raising awareness, we're hoping to garner commitments from more operators to use SAF and present those commitments to producers, in essence saying -- "Here are our customers. The demand is there. Lufthansa Launches Sustainable Aviation Fuel Carbon Offsetting Platform (Int'l., Ind. Report)

In Berlin, German airline Lufthansa's Innovation Hub is reporting the launch of its "Compensaid" sustainability platform focused on carbon-neutral sustainable renewable fuels (SAF). The new platform will allow airline passengers to offset their individual carbon footprint by using SAF, reducing up to 80 pct of their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

"Compensaid" combines a global airline flight tracking tool with a sustainability platform that makes it possible to directly offset individual CO2 emissions. The platform offers two options for carbon offsetting -- the option to replace fossil fuel with SAF, which is calculated through a market-based surcharge on flights, or the alternative is to use Compensaid to support a reforestation project in Nicaragua, reducing CO2 emissions in the long-term. German Sustainable Aviation Fuels Initiative Adds Members (Int'l)

The Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany (AIREG) reports Berlin-based Rosneft Deutschland and BP Europa have become the organizations newest members.

AIREG aims to promote the research, production and usage of sustainable aviation fuels to reduce carbon emissions in aviation through the use of alternative fuels. AIREG members include universities, research institutions, plant manufacturers and operators, petroleum companies, engine and aircraft manufacturers, airports and airlines and others.

Rosneft Deutschland currently produces around 300,000 tpy of jet fuel annually and implements into-plane aviation fuel supply in Munich, Berlin-Tegel, and Berlin-Schonefeld airports. The Russian oil company subsidiary currently blends over 400,000 tonnes of biofuels annuals across three refineries for use in the transportation sector.

EgyptAir Operates Record Sustainable Jet Fueled Flight (Int'l.)

In Cairo, Egypt's national air carrier, EgyptAir is reporting receipt of its newest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The Dreamliner flew 10,973 kilometres from Seattle to Cairo fueled solely by sustainable aviation fuel to become the world's longest sustainable flight.

EgyptAir is the first operator to use Boeing's new sustainable fuel delivery program that gives airlines the option to pick biofuel for aircraft delivery flights. Sustainable aviation fuels have been shown to help reduce aircraft CO2 emissions by up to 80 per cent. The biodiesel biofuel used to power the Dreamliner was created from agricultural waste by Boston-headquartered World Energy at its Paramount, California facility which was designed to produce renewable jet fuel on a commercial scale. In Ireland, the University of Limerick Bernal Institute reports it has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Netherlands-based SkyNRG to explore the development of sustainable aviation fuel manufacturing in Ireland.

Under the term of the MoU, the Bernal Institute and SkyNRG will collaborate to explore the potential of a regional Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supply chain in Ireland and "expand the relationship for research cooperation on environmental, technological, societal and market development of sustainable aviation biofuels in the Irish context." The collaboration emerged from the industry drive for the development of SAF production capacity and an EU-wide call to reduce aviation emissions. Boeing Environmental Plan Advances Biofuels (Ind. Report)

Aviation industry giant Boeing reports the release of its 2019 Global Environment Report highlighting how the company is building cleaner, more fuel-efficient airplanes and finding innovative ways to recycle and conserve resources.

In 2018, Boeing unveiled its new environment strategy through 2025 with ambitious goals to innovate products for environmental performance, reduce emissions, waste, and water and energy consumption at work sites, and to work with communities around the globe. Report highlights include:

  • Working with Etihad Airways to fly a 787 Dreamliner powered partly by biofuel made from desert plants irrigated with seawater;
  • Catalyzing development of sustainable aviation fuel and offering customers the option of using biofuel on delivery flights;

  • KLM Secures Large Sustainable Aviation Fuel Uptake (Int'l Report)

    Dutch air carrier KLM is reporting a 10-year agreement for the development and purchase of 75,000 tpy of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The agreement is in keeping with KLM's sustainability ambitions and will reduce its CO2 emissions by 200,000 tpy.

    KLM serves as one of the partners in a collaborative project -- called DSL-01 -- that will develop Europe's first dedicated SAF production plant which is expected to open in 2022 and produce 100,000 tpy of SAF and 15,000 tpy of bioLPG as a byproduct. Other partners in the project, which is expected to come in at roughly €260 million ($290 million), include Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, SkyNRG, and SHV Energy, a global LPG distribution company.

    SAF delivers a CO2 reduction of at least 85 pct compared with fossil fuel and contributes to a significant decrease in ultra-fine particles and sulfur emissions.     SkyNRG Developing European Sustainable Jet Biofuel Plant (Int'l)

    Further to our 10 Sept., 2018 report, Geneva, Switzerland-base aviation biofuel specialist SkyNRG is reporting it will develop Europe's first sustainable aviation fuel production plant in the Dutch province of Groningen. The new facility will use regionally sourced waste streams, such as used cooking oil to produce sustainable fuel and bio propane for KLM and SHV Energy respectively.

    Starting in 2022, the facility will produce 100,000 tpy of sustainable fuel which translates into the aviation industry reducing its CO2 emissions with 270,000 tpy year. The aviation industry is currently responsible for more than 2 pct of the global CO2 emissions.

    Compared with conventional jet fuel, SkyNRG's state of the art facility reduces life cycle CO2 emissions by at least 85 pct In addition, flights using sustainable aviation fuel create significantly less emissions of ultrafine particles and sulphur.     Sweden Foresees Fossil Energy Freedom by 2045 (Int'l Report)

    In Stockholm, the government of Sweden is reporting han initiative that foresees the country being free of fossil fuel generated energy by 2045.

    The initiative also calls for the introduction of a greenhouse gas reduction mandate for aviation fuel sold in Sweden. The reduction level would be 0.8 pct in 2021 gradually increasing to 27 pct in 2030. The reduction levels are estimated to be equivalent of 1 pct (11,000 tons) sustainable aviation fuel in 2021, 5 pct (56,000 tons) in 2025 and 30 pct (340,000 tons) in 2030.     JAL Commits to Sustainable Aviation Biofuel Flights (Int'l)

    Japan Airlines (JAL) is reporting it plans to operate select flights from San Francisco to Tokyo (Haneda Airport) with an aircraft fueled by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supplied by Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K., beginning the month. In January 2009, JAL operated a test flight in Japan with SAF using a mixture of three second-generation biofuel feedstocks and in November 2017, the airline operated a passenger flight with SAF from Chicago to Tokyo. The airline also reports it plans to operate a charter flight with SAF made from recycled clothes.

    Finnair Touts Biofuel, CO2 Emissions Offset Service (Int'l)

    Further to our July 30th coverage, Finland's national air carrier Finnair reports it will offer a new service allowing customers to offset the CO2 emissions of their flights by funding emissions reduction projects or carbon sinks, or by supporting the use of biofuels, beginning in early 2019. Finnair's partners for its offset service will include Dutch SkyNRG company and for emission reduction projects, Finnairand the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO), an international financial institution backed by the Nordic states.

    The Helsinki-headquartered airline is part of an initiative driven by Shell, SkyNRG, World Energy, San Francisco Airport and several other airlines, which aims to pave the way for a longer term, more resilient supply chain for sustainable aviation fuels, and thus supporting the aviation industry's common CO2 emission reduction targets.     Heathrow Unveils Carbon Neutral Growth Plan (Int'l, Ind. Report)

    In a first for the UK aviation industry, London's Heathrow Airport has revealed its four-part action plan to reduce and offset the growth in emissions from a planned carbon-neutral expansion in summer 2019

    Heathrow's plan builds on the momentum of technological change within the aviation industry to make travel more sustainable. The plan outlines action on four key areas including: cleaner aircraft performance and technology; improvements to airspace and ground operations; increased use of sustainable aviation fuels; and developing and promoting new carbon offsetting technologies and options. Additionally, Heathrow is calling on the ICAO -- the UN body for international aviation -- to develop global goals for the uptake of sustainable alternative fuels, and calling for the UK Government to engage ICAO and fellow member states to agree on a 2050 carbon emissions reduction goal for international aviation.     Business Jets Fuel Green: A Step Toward Sustainability (Conferences & Events)

    A coalition of international aviation organizations is reporting its up-coming Business Jets Fuel Green: A Step Toward Sustainability event scheduled for Jan. 17, 2019, at the Van Nuys Airport (VNY) in Southern California. According to the organizers, the upcoming event reaffirms the general aviation industry's commitment to advancing the development and adoption of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel (SAJF). The event will demonstrate that SAJF can become a mainstream, drop-in alternative for today's general aviation aircraft.     According to the Montreal-headquartered Intl Business Aviation Council (IBAC) Director General Kurt Edwards, "The global business aviation industry has committed to mitigating and ultimately reducing its carbon emissions through a number of measures, including operational improvements and new technologies.     Neste, Air BP Seal Green Jet Fuel Cooperation Deal (Int'l)

    Biofuels specialist Neste and aviation fuel supplier Air BP report they are partnering to scale up the fledgling supply chain for sustainable jet fuels made from waste-based feedstocks and will work together to introduce a co-branded sustainable aviation fuel to market at airports through Air BP's global network.

    Neste's MY Renewable Jet Fuel has been used in thousands of commercial flights. Similarly, Air BP has supplied its BP Biojet product at 10 airports across the Nordic countries since 2014.

    The aviation industry is facing mounting pressure to curb emissions ahead of the introduction of the UN-backed CORSIA offsetting scheme, which is set to impose a carbon price on a growing number of airlines with a view to ensuring the sector delivers on its goals of securing 'carbon neutral growth' from 2020 and cutting net aviation emissions in half by 2050.     EU Will Miss Aviation Emissions Target, Report Warns (Int'l)

    According to a report prepared for Brussels-based European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E), the EU will miss its 2030 aviation emissions target by almost 100 million tonnes if it adopts the new, air transport industry backed Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

    T&E claims CORSIA would allow airlines to offset emissions growth, rather than necessarily reduce it, and offered only "cheap and ineffective" remedies for emissions, which contribute towards climate change. It also noted that CORSIA would save airlines more than €3bn a year compared with expanding an existing scheme.

    The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the UN agency that developed CORSIA, said the scheme was one part of "ICAO's basket of measures designed to reduce carbon emissions from international aviation" and that improvements in aircraft technology, operations and sustainable aviation fuels would "achieve the international aviation sector's global goal of carbon neutral growth from 2020."

    Beginning in 2019, CORSIA will require airlines to monitor, report and verify CO2 emissions to establish a baseline, before a pilot phase from 2021 to 2023 for volunteer states. From 2027, most of ICAO's 191 member states will have to participate. The EU is aiming to cut GHG emissions by 40 pct from 1990 by 2030.     United Looks to Biofuels for Emissions Reductions (Ind. Report)

    US air carrier United Airlines reports it plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 pct by 2050 and to that end will continue investing in newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft, implement operational changes to conserve fuel, and expand its use of aviation biofuels.

    Ottawa Launches Green Jet Fuel Innovation Competition (Ind. Report)

    The Canadian Minister of Natural Resources, the Hon. Amarjeet Sohi has launched the Canadian Federal (Liberal) government's initiative to support and encourage Canadian innovation in the field of low-carbon aviation biofuels.

    Under the 18-month competition, innovators can win $2 million apiece for four teams that develop the most innovative solutions to produce economical and environmentally sustainable aviation fuel. An additional $5 million grand prize is on the line, as well as a Cross-Canada Flight Competition where the first to fuel a Canadian commercial flight using a minimum 10 pct blend of Canadian-made biojet fuel will win $1 million.

    As previously reported, ASTM International has recently revised ASTM D7566 Annex A5 -- the Standard Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuel Containing Synthesized Hydrocarbons -- to add ethanol as an approved feedstock for producing alcohol-to-jet synthetic paraffinic kerosene (ATJ-SPK), clearing the way for increased adoption of sustainable aviation fuels produced from a variety of feedstocks.

    Supporting this advancement is technology from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), which developed a thermocatalytic process for converting ethanol into ATJ-SPK , and its industrial partner, LanzaTech and its proprietary gas-to-ethanol process.     Cathay Pacific Delivering Aircraft on Jet Biofuel Blend (Ind. Report)

    Hong Kong-headquartered air carrier Cathay Pacific reports it will use a 10 pct blend of alternative jet biofuel to deliver new of 20 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft to Hong Kong over the next 4 years. The first A350-1000 will depart Airbus headquarters in Toulouse on 19 June. A further seven aircraft are due for delivery by the end of 2018.

    In 2014, Cathay Pacific became an equity investor in US-based Fulcrum BioEnergy Inc., which focuses on turning municipal solid waste into sustainable aviation fuel. As previously reported, Fulcrum broke ground on its first commercial-scale plant last month in Nevada. When fully operational in 202, the plant is expected to produce approximately 10 million gpy.     Shell Aviation and Geneva, Switzerland-based SkyNRG are reporting a long term strategic collaboration aimed at promoting and developing long-term opportunities for low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel. The two firms will jointly fund the effort, according to the release.

    SkyNRG, which blends and distributes sustainable aviation fuel as well as developing regional supply chains, has supplied sustainable aviation fuel to more than 25 airlines worldwide, according to the release.

    Sea-Tac, Partners Promoting Sustainable Aviation Biofuels (Ind. Report)

    In Washington State, the Port of Seattle is reporting that Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Horizon Airlines, Spirit Airlines and others will collaborate on a work plan for providing all airlines at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) with access to sustainable aviation biofuel.

    The partners will work to meet the specific sustainable aviation fuel timetable and goals approved by the Port of Seattle Commission in December 2017 -- a minimum of 10 pct of sustainable jet fuel to be produced locally from sustainable sources within 10 years, increasing to 50 pct by 2050.

    Airlines at Sea-Tac are projected to use about 700 million gpy of jet fuel. A 10 pct reduction would eliminate the equivalent of 682,500 metric tpy of airlines greenhouse gas emissions.     In a statement, airline industry group The International Air Transport Association (IATA) rays it foresees over one billion passengers having taken flights powered by a biofuel blend -- aka sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) -- by 2025. Biofuels are a key to IATA's goal of cutting the airline industry's net carbon emissions by 50 pct compared to 2005 by 2050.

    According to IATA, SAF powered flights could reduce the life-cycle carbon emissions of that flight by up to 80 pct. The aviation industry has also vowed to use non-food, sustainable biofuel feedstocks. To that end, the IATA sees government incentives, grants, loan guarantees, support for SAF demonstration plants and supply chain R&D for the production of aviation biofuels as a key to getting the aviation biofuels industry off the ground.     AltAir Biojet Fuel Producer Awarded RSB Certification (Ind. Report)

    Seattle-based AltAir Fuels reports its 40 MMgy biojet fuel production facility in Paramount, California, has been certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) to produce biojet fuel, renewable diesel and naphtha. AltAir Fuels has been a member of the RSB since 2014.

    According to Geneva-headquartered RSB, the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group (SAFUG) of 27 airlines endorses AltAir's fuels. SAFUG members have pledged to achieve RSB or equivalent certification. The Natural Resources Defense Council has also issued a recent report encouraging airlines to purchase certified-sustainable biofuels and recommended the RSB framework.
